Areca Nuts in the Latest Year

Across the 127 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply fell 11.7 percent, a loss of 279,524 tonnes. India's latest decline exceeded the entire net fall, so gains elsewhere partly offset it; Myanmar added 40,974 tonnes and Bangladesh 20,159. China shed 28,251 tonnes and Vietnam 20,475. Nine countries joined in 2023, Thailand the largest at 10,134 tonnes.

Areca Nuts Across the Full Period

Of the 73 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total expanded from 1,260,053 tonnes to 2,102,786, a rise of 842,734 tonnes or 66.9 percent. India contributed 51.6 percent of that gain and Bangladesh 22.1 percent. China's earlier base of 691.07 tonnes grew into 51,116 tonnes of new supply. Sixty-three countries entered the period while two left; the newcomers held 11,047.91 tonnes in 2023 and the leavers 0.18 tonnes in 2019, a net effect of 11,047.73 tonnes.

Reading the Areca Nuts Per-Person Column

FAO's areca nut per-person series stops early: of the countries with a 2023 value, only two show a gram figure, both zero. The last year with wide coverage is 2019, so this page compares tonnages rather than grams per day. In 2019, Taiwan led the per-person column at 10.47 grams a day, followed by Myanmar at 5.35 and Bangladesh at 2.87.

What the Areca Nuts Table Measures

Areca nuts, the seed of the areca palm, stand as one FAO item and are not blended into any other. Each tonnage is a reference-year supply figure, not a harvest or a sale.

Where Areca Nuts Supply Divided

India's share, nearly three of every five tonnes, dwarfed every other reporter. Taiwan moved the other way, easing from 90,811 tonnes in 2019 to 77,841. China recorded the steepest percentage increase, from 691.07 tonnes to 51,807, though its new five-year supply still sat below India's single-year decline of 296,360 tonnes.

Methodology

Tonnes are FAO's food supply quantity for areca nuts, taken from element 5141; the grams per person per day come from element 665, and both cover 2019 to 2023. Change figures divide by the earlier year, and no percentage is reported when the base is zero. A comparison uses only countries holding a value in both years. A zero cell is a reported zero and a blank cell is a missing report, and the two are never swapped. The values describe food available for human consumption, with no allowance for household waste or losses, so they exceed the amount eaten. The table lists 139 countries, with World, regions and the China aggregate removed and China kept as one row; 136 carry a 2023 value and form the annual total. FAO's areca per-person column is empty for 2023 except in two countries. Compiled by StatsGeo from FAO FAOSTAT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the largest areca nut supply?

India, with 1,221,420 tonnes in 2023, or 57.8 percent of the 2,113,834-tonne total, followed by Bangladesh at 356,745 tonnes and Myanmar at 205,990.

How much areca nut supply was available in 2023?

The 136 countries reporting a 2023 value held 2,113,834 tonnes. That was 279,524 tonnes, or 11.7 percent, below the 2,393,215 tonnes of 2022, a two-year fall led by India.

How much did India's areca nut supply change?

India fell from 1,517,780 tonnes in 2022 to 1,221,420 in 2023, a loss of 296,360 tonnes or 19.5 percent, still the largest supply by far.

Is this what people actually eat?

No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, the supply a country holds, not what people actually eat, so the rankings reflect supply rather than diet.

Why is there no areca nut per-person ranking?

FAO's per-person column, in grams per day, is empty for 2023 in all but two countries, so the page compares tonnages; the last year with wide coverage is 2019.
