Cherries Consumption by Country

Türkiye reported 469,168 tonnes of cherry food supply in 2023, 19.5 percent of the listed total. China came second at 372,264 tonnes and the United States third at 234,474. Per person, Greece led at 20.45 grams a day. The United States added 67,193 tonnes in the latest year, while Iran followed. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Key Findings

Türkiye had the largest cherry food supply among the listed countries in 2023 at 469,168 tonnes, accounting for 19.5 percent of the listed total. China ranked second at 372,264 tonnes and the United States third at 234,474 tonnes. Greece had the highest food supply per person at 20.45 grams per person per day, followed by Albania and Türkiye. Across 150 countries with values in both 2019 and 2023, the listed cherry food supply increased by 11.2 percent. China recorded the largest five-year increase at 150,494 tonnes, while the United States recorded the largest increase between 2022 and 2023 at 67,193 tonnes.

These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAOSTAT food supply data and should not be interpreted as the amount of cherries people actually ate.

Türkiye Leads Cherry Supply

Türkiye led at 469,168 tonnes, 1.26 times China. The United States sat third at 234,474 tonnes, ahead of Russia at 153,201 and Uzbekistan at 150,552. The top three held 44.7 percent of the 2,404,849-tonne total, and the top five 57.4 percent. Of all 164 countries in the file, 154 carried a 2023 value.

The United States Drives the Latest Increase

Across the 154 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 4.1 percent, from 2,309,710 tonnes, a gain of 95,138. The United States added 67,193 tonnes, up 40.2 percent, most of the net rise. Iran added 35,055 tonnes, up 37.3 percent. Türkiye added 34,427 tonnes, up 7.9 percent overall. Greece added 23,462 tonnes, up 44.3 percent overall. Uzbekistan shed 22,730 tonnes, down 13.1 percent overall. China shed 18,835 tonnes overall. Canada added 16,954 tonnes, up 67.3 percent overall.

China Leads the Five-Year Increase

Among the 150 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 11.2 percent, from 2,161,992 tonnes, a gain of 242,857. China added 150,494 tonnes, up 67.9 percent from 221,770, most of the net rise. Türkiye added 51,473 tonnes, up 12.3 percent. Russia added 30,969 tonnes, up 25.3 percent. Poland added 26,333 tonnes, up 62.0 percent overall. Greece added 23,744 tonnes, up 45.0 percent. Spain shed 19,650 tonnes, down 29.1 percent. Seven countries left over the period, against four arrivals overall.

Russia Holds Fourth

Russia sat fourth at 153,201 tonnes, adding 30,969 over five years, up 25.3 percent. Uzbekistan, fifth at 150,552 tonnes, shed 22,730 in the latest year. Iran, sixth at 128,990 tonnes, added 35,055 lately and 18,794 from 110,196 over five. Italy, seventh at 78,790 tonnes, sits outside the per-person top ten.

Greece Holds Eighth

Greece sat eighth at 76,454 tonnes, adding 23,462 in the latest year and 23,744 from 52,710 over five, and led per person at 20.45 grams. Poland, ninth at 68,790 tonnes, added 26,333 over five years, up 62.0 percent. Syria closed the top ten at 64,494 tonnes. Spain shed 19,650 tonnes over five years, down 29.1 percent overall. Canada added 16,954 tonnes in the latest year, up 67.3 percent.

Greece Leads Per Person

Greece's 20.45 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Albania at 17.46 and Türkiye at 14.73. Bulgaria followed at 14.02 grams and Uzbekistan at 11.57. Montenegro sat sixth at 9.92 grams, ahead of Armenia at 8.32 and Suriname at 8.04. China, second by volume at 372,264 tonnes, sat at 0.72 grams per person.
