Geothermal electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from geothermal sources in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 20 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 0.37 quad Btu in 2024, down from 0.37 in 2023.
Geothermal electricity generation measures the electricity produced from geothermal sources, as reported in the EIA dataset. The United States alone accounted for about 31 percent of the World total in 2024, and the United States and Indonesia together for about 47 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 56 percent, the top five for about 73 percent, and the top ten for about 95 percent. Geothermal electricity generation in the United States was about 2.0 times that of Indonesia, the second-largest generator. The United States generated the most geothermal electricity in 2024 with 0.12 quad Btu. Indonesia ranked second with 0.06 quad Btu, followed by the Philippines (0.04), New Zealand (0.03), Türkiye (0.03), Kenya (0.02), Iceland (0.02), Italy (0.02), Mexico (0.01), and Japan (0.01). In Asia, Indonesia (0.06) and the Philippines (0.04) were the largest geothermal electricity generators, followed by Türkiye (0.03) and Japan (0.01). In Europe, Türkiye is the largest generator, followed by Iceland (0.02) and Italy (0.02). In North America, the United States (0.12) leads by a wide margin, followed by Mexico (0.01). In South America, Chile (0.002) is the only country listed in the dataset. In Central America, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala report smaller amounts. In Africa, Kenya (0.02) is the only African country listed in the dataset. Geothermal electricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 73 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 95 percent. The United States remained the largest generator in every year shown. New Zealand recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 0.0264 quad Btu in 2023 to 0.0305 in 2024, an increase of 0.0041 quad Btu (about 15.6 percent). Japan rose by 0.0004, and Costa Rica by 0.0003. The United States recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.1193 to 0.1161 quad Btu (down 0.0032, about 2.7 percent). Mexico fell from 0.0144 to 0.0123 quad Btu (down 0.0021), while Indonesia declined by 0.0006. The World total declined by 0.0022 quad Btu, or about 0.6 percent, between 2023 and 2024, although both years round to 0.37 quad Btu. The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations. The World total for geothermal electricity generation moved between 0.36 and 0.37 quad Btu in this period. It was 0.36 in 2019, 0.37 in 2020, 0.37 in 2021, 0.37 in 2022, 0.37 in 2023, and then 0.37 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to geothermal electricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.35-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero.
