Homogenized Meat Preparations Consumption by Country
Mexico reported the largest food supply of homogenized meat preparations in 2023, at 8,692 tonnes, about 10.7 percent of the listed total of 81,435 tonnes. Belarus ranked second at 5,454 tonnes, followed by Hungary at 5,248 tonnes. Mongolia ranked first per person, at 3.42 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Which country has the largest food supply of homogenized meat preparations? Mexico had the largest reported food supply in 2023, at 8,692 tonnes, followed by Belarus at 5,454 tonnes and Hungary at 5,248 tonnes. Mexico accounted for 10.7 percent of the listed total of 81,435 tonnes across 148 countries reporting values. Mongolia ranked first in food supply per person, at 3.42 grams per person per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Spain placed fourth at 4,806 tonnes, with Belgium fifth at 4,803 and New Zealand sixth at 4,386. Mongolia, Slovakia, Cambodia and the Czech Republic closed the top ten between 3,685 and 4,285 tonnes. The top three held 23.8 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 35.6 percent. Mexico lost 5,373 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 38.2 percent. Thailand lost 2,934 tonnes, down 45.7 percent. Spain shed 1,574 tonnes, down 24.7 percent. Kuwait fell 1,250 tonnes, down 99.0 percent to 12.15 tonnes. Hungary gave up 1,152 tonnes, down 18.0 percent. Cambodia added 3,771 tonnes from 63.17. Czechia added 1,525 tonnes, up 70.6 percent. Malaysia added 1,160 tonnes from 106.01. The 145 countries with reported values in both years eased from 82,724 tonnes to 81,433 tonnes, down 1,291 tonnes, or 1.6 percent. Syria, Tunisia and Tuvalu first reported values in 2023, with a combined total of about 1 tonne. Between 2019 and 2023, the 140 countries with reported values in both years grew from 67,407 tonnes to 81,221 tonnes, up 13,814 tonnes, or 20.5 percent. Mexico rose from 11.54 tonnes in 2019, a net increase of about 8,680 tonnes over the comparison period. Thailand lost 3,785 tonnes, down 52.1 percent. Cambodia added 3,779 tonnes from 54.68. Gambia shed 3,016 tonnes, down 90.5 percent. Czechia added 2,442 tonnes, up 196.5 percent. Belgium added 2,417 tonnes, up 101.3 percent. Laos added 2,262 tonnes from 10.10. Belarus added 2,261 tonnes, up 70.8 percent. Seven countries with 572 tonnes in 2019 were absent from the comparison, while eight additional countries contributed 214 tonnes to the 2023 total. Mongolia ranked first in 2023, followed by New Zealand at 2.32 grams per person per day. Slovakia placed third at 1.94 grams, with Eswatini at 1.84 and Belarus at 1.64. Hungary reported 1.48 grams, with Nauru at 1.43 and Belgium at 1.12. The Czech Republic and Laos followed below 1.1 grams. Mexico, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population. Homogenized meat preparations for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 158 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 148 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. Australia fell from 57.81 tonnes in 2022 to a reported zero in 2023, India from 0.20 tonnes to zero, and Saudi Arabia from 275.58 tonnes to zero. Reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO, while blank cells indicate missing data. Because the starting values for Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia were very small, their large percentage changes should be read alongside the absolute tonnage changes. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report homogenized meat preparation food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing data. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Mexico rank first by total supply but not per person?
Mexico reported 8,692 tonnes in 2023, while Mongolia ranked first per person at 3.42 grams a day in the same table. Total tonnage and per-person supply measure different things, so their leaders can differ.
How much did Cambodia's reported supply change in 2023?
Cambodia's reported supply rose from 63.17 tonnes in 2022 to 3,834 tonnes in 2023, an increase of approximately 3,771 tonnes. Because the starting value was small, the percentage increase is unusually large.
Did Mexico's reported supply grow steadily from 2019 to 2023?
No. It rose from 11.54 tonnes in 2019 to 13,386 tonnes in 2020, then fell to a lower level by 2023. The five-year comparison shows a large net increase, not steady year-by-year growth.
Does food supply represent the amount of homogenized meat people ate?
No. The figures describe food available for human consumption in the reference year, not measured individual intake. They should not be treated as direct measurements of what people actually ate.
Which countries had the largest reported supply after Mexico?
Belarus ranked second at 5,454 tonnes in 2023, followed by Hungary at 5,248 tonnes. Spain and Belgium were close behind at 4,806 and 4,803 tonnes, respectively, in the same table.
