Hydroelectricity Generation by Country
Hydroelectricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from hydroelectric sources in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 133 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 15.4 quad Btu in 2024, up from 14.44 in 2023.
Hydroelectricity generation measures the electricity produced from hydroelectric sources, as reported in the EIA dataset. China alone accounted for about 32 percent of the World total in 2024, and China and Brazil together for about 41 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 48 percent, the top five for about 58 percent, and the top ten for about 70 percent. China's hydroelectricity generation was about 3.4 times that of Brazil, the second-largest generator. China generated the most hydroelectricity generation in 2024 with 4.86 quad Btu. Brazil ranked second with 1.43 quad Btu, followed by Canada (1.17), United States (0.83), Russia (0.72), India (0.53), Norway (0.47), Vietnam (0.33), Venezuela (0.25), Türkiye (0.24). In Asia, China (4.86) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (0.53) and Vietnam (0.33); Japan (0.24) and Türkiye (0.24) also report notable volumes. In Europe, Norway (0.47) is the largest generator, ahead of France (0.24), Sweden (0.22) and Austria (0.15). In North America, Canada (1.17) dominates, followed by the United States (0.83) and Mexico (0.08). In South America, Brazil (1.43) leads, ahead of Venezuela (0.25) and Colombia (0.19). In Africa, Zambia (0.06) and Mozambique (0.06) report the largest volumes, while values remain small compared with global totals. From the same EIA dataset, this indicator is reported separately from other generation sources. The comparison is limited to the two indicators taken directly from the same EIA tables. Hydroelectricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 58 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 70 percent. The structure was stable between 2019 and 2024, with China remaining the largest generator in every year shown. China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 4.24 quad Btu in 2023 to 4.86 in 2024 (up 0.62, about 14.6 percent). France rose by 0.05, and Russia by 0.05. Canada recorded the largest decline, falling from 1.23 to 1.17 quad Btu (down 0.06, about 5.1 percent). Vietnam fell from 0.34 to 0.33 (down 0.02), while Romania declined by 0.01. The World total rose from 14.44 to 15.4 quad Btu (up 0.96, about 6.6 percent). The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations. The World total for hydroelectricity generation moved between 14.35 and 15.4 quad Btu in this period. It was 14.35 in 2019, 14.78 in 2020, 14.57 in 2021, 14.76 in 2022, 14.44 in 2023, and then 15.4 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to hydroelectricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.33-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries does not equal the World total where shown, because the source includes estimates and rounding.
