International Tourist Arrivals by Country

International tourist arrivals measure the number of international visitors entering a country or territory for tourism purposes. The indicator provides a useful way to compare the volume of inbound tourism across destinations. The dataset covers 181 countries and territories, with the most recent data reaching 2024 for some countries and earlier years for others.

Countries With the Most International Tourist Arrivals

Among countries with 2024 data, Spain recorded the highest number of international tourist arrivals at 93.8 million. The United States ranked second with 72.4 million, followed by Italy with 57.7 million, Mexico with 45.0 million, and the United Kingdom with 38.2 million. Germany (37.4 million), Japan (36.9 million), Saudi Arabia (29.7 million), Portugal (29.0 million), and Hong Kong (21.9 million) also ranked among the destinations with the highest recorded figures.

Several countries that are typically regarded as major tourism destinations do not have 2024 data in this dataset. Türkiye, for example, recorded 50.5 million arrivals in 2022, the most recent year available. France reported 48.4 million in 2021, while Greece recorded 27.8 million in 2022. These figures are shown for context, but their observation years differ from the 2024 figures used for the latest comparisons.

Among other notable destinations with 2024 data, Canada recorded 19.9 million arrivals, Poland 19.7 million, South Korea 16.4 million, and Macau 16.0 million. Indonesia, Romania, Hungary, Singapore, Albania, and Kazakhstan each reported more than 10 million arrivals in 2024.

Global Tourism Patterns

The top of the ranking is dominated by European destinations. Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Germany all feature prominently. The United States is the leading non-European destination.

Asian destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Indonesia also appear high on the list, though several major Asian tourism markets — including Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam — have more limited recent data in this dataset. Their most recent figures, where available, suggest significant tourism volume, but they cannot be directly compared with the 2024 leaders without acknowledging the year difference.

The dataset also highlights how sharply international tourism was affected during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. Arrivals fell substantially in many countries in 2020 compared with 2019 levels. Countries with data for later years generally show a recovery in international arrivals, although the pace and extent of recovery vary between destinations.

International Tourism Around the World

Beyond the top destinations, the dataset reveals a wide range of tourism volumes. European countries with smaller populations, such as Portugal (29.0 million), Greece (27.8 million in 2022), and Croatia (15.3 million in 2022), record high numbers of international tourist arrivals relative to their population sizes. These figures illustrate the significant volume of international tourism recorded by several European destinations.

In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia recorded 29.7 million arrivals in 2024, placing it among the global top ten. The United Arab Emirates reported 11.5 million in 2021. In Latin America, Mexico leads with 45.0 million, followed by the Dominican Republic (8.9 million in 2023) and Argentina (6.6 million in 2024).

In Africa, Morocco recorded 10.9 million arrivals in 2022, the highest figure in the continent from this dataset. South Africa reported 3.9 million in 2022. Several smaller island destinations — including the Maldives, Seychelles, and Cape Verde — record high arrivals relative to their populations in the dataset.

At the lower end of the scale, many small island states and remote territories record relatively few international tourist arrivals. Several Pacific island nations in the dataset report annual figures in the hundreds or low thousands.
