Iodine Production by Country

Iodine production by country measures how much iodine each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures follow the definitions used in the underlying sources. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles them from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics. The table below lists 9 countries that record iodine production in the period. 2024 data are available for 7 major producers, which produced a combined 33,013 tonnes in 2024, while China and the United States report 2023 data, the latest year available for them.

Iodine Production Around the World

In Latin America, Chile is the dominant producer with 22,000 tonnes in 2024. The United States recorded 1,600 tonnes in 2023, its latest year.

In Asia, Japan (9,300 tonnes) leads, ahead of Turkmenistan (770), Iran (700), and China (600, its 2023 figure). Azerbaijan (210) and Indonesia (30) are smaller producers. In Europe, Russia recorded 3 tonnes in 2024.

Largest Changes in Iodine Production, 2020–2024

Chile recorded the largest increase between 2020 and 2024, rising from 20,200 to 22,000 tonnes (up 1,800). Japan rose from 8,880 to 9,300 (up 420), and Turkmenistan from 600 to 770 (up 170). Iran rose from 386.3 to 700 (up 313.7).

The United States recorded the largest decline, falling from 1,700 tonnes in 2020 to 1,600 tonnes in 2023 (down 100). Indonesia declined from 31 to 30 (down 1), while China and Russia reported unchanged production.

Methodology

The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national iodine production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. Values refer to iodine production, expressed in tonnes, in line with the definitions used in the underlying sources, and 2024 figures are preliminary estimates from the USGS. The main comparison uses 2024 data for the 7 countries with available 2024 figures, while China and the United States use their latest available data, from 2023. Country-level figures are not available for 2021 in the source, and the year is therefore not shown. Countries with no iodine production in any year of the period are excluded from the table. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported. According to Our World in Data, the sum of all countries may exceed the World total in certain years, by up to 10 percent, due to discrepancies between the underlying data sources.
