Locust Beans Consumption by Country
Vietnam reported the largest locust bean food supply in 2023, 49.2 percent of the listed total. The United States came second at 1,396 tonnes and the United Kingdom third at 135. Per person, Vietnam also led at 0.04 grams a day. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Locust Bean Supply by Country: Key Findings. Vietnam had the largest reported locust bean supply in 2023, at 1,618 tonnes, accounting for 49.2 percent of the listed total of approximately 3,286 tonnes. The United States ranked second with 1,396 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom with 135 tonnes. Vietnam also had the highest reported supply per person, at 0.04 grams per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Vietnam Leads by Total Supply
Vietnam led, 1.16 times the United States by reported volume. The United Kingdom sat third at 135 tonnes, ahead of Indonesia at 46 and Russia at 38. The top three held 95.8 percent of the 3,286-tonne total, and the top five 98.4 percent. Of 28 countries in the file, 22 carried a 2023 value.
Across the 19 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 28.7 percent, from 2,448 tonnes, a gain of 703. Vietnam recorded the largest increase, rising from 97 tonnes in the comparison group. Saudi Arabia fell to zero from 644 tonnes; with a zero base, no percentage applies. Libya fell to zero from 73 tonnes and Chile from 60. Canada shed 37 tonnes, down 54.2 percent. The United States added 14 tonnes. Mauritius, Senegal and the United Kingdom first reported values in 2023, adding 135 tonnes. Among the 14 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply fell 28.6 percent, from 2,092 tonnes, a loss of 598. Libya fell to zero from 274 tonnes, the largest fall in the file. Indonesia shed 191 tonnes, down 80.6 percent from 237. Chile fell to zero from 56 tonnes. The United States shed 35 tonnes. Five countries with 104 tonnes in 2019 were absent from the comparison, while eight additional countries contributed 1,792 tonnes to the 2023 total, led by Vietnam. Spain reported 25,489 tonnes in 2021 and a reported zero in both 2022 and 2023; this break should be checked against FAOSTAT records before interpretation. Canada ranked sixth at 31 tonnes, shedding 37 in the latest year and 29 from 60 over five. China, seventh at 15 tonnes, shed 11 in the latest year, down 42.9 percent, and 8 from 23 over five. Kuwait, eighth at 5 tonnes, added 3 over five years. Montenegro and Norway closed the top ten at reported values below one tonne. Indonesia ranked fourth at 46 tonnes, easing from 43 in 2022 and 237 in 2019. Russia, fifth at 38 tonnes, shed 12 in the latest year. The United States, second by volume, added 14 lately and shed 35 from 1,431 over five. The United Kingdom, third, first reported in this dataset in 2023. Vietnam topped the per-person table, ahead of the United Kingdom and the United States at 0.01 each. Values elsewhere round to 0.0 grams, which reflects rounding rather than proof of exactly zero supply. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population. This dataset follows the FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts item for locust beans (carobs) from 2019 to 2023. It reports food supply in tonnes and grams per person per day. Annual totals include countries with reported values for the relevant year, while changes between years use only countries with values in both years. The dataset contains 28 country rows after aggregate entries are removed; 22 have a reported value for 2023. Reported zeros are retained, while blank entries are treated as missing data. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual dietary intake.Vietnam Records the Largest Annual Increase

What the Locust Bean Data Covers
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest locust bean supply in 2023?
Vietnam ranked first with 1,618 tonnes in 2023, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom in the same listed table that year, with the United States second.
Why did Vietnam's supply increase so sharply?
Vietnam's reported supply rose from 97 tonnes in 2022 to 1,618 tonnes in 2023, an increase of 1,521 tonnes. The size of this change makes source verification worthwhile before publication.
Which countries reported zero supply in 2023 after reporting positive values in 2022?
Saudi Arabia fell from about 644 tonnes to zero in the comparison group, Libya from about 73 tonnes to zero, and Chile from about 60 tonnes to zero.
Which country had the highest supply per person?
Vietnam ranked first at 0.04 grams per person per day in 2023. The United Kingdom and United States followed at 0.01 grams each in the same listed table.
Do these figures show how much people actually ate?
No. They measure the reported food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the amount of locust beans actually eaten by individual people in each year.
