Key Takeaways

The meat aggregate covers the meat items in the FAO Food Balances classification: poultry, pigmeat, bovine meat, mutton and goat meat, and other meat, each also treated in a separate article. Poultry at 135,809 thousand tonnes and pigmeat at 121,223 together hold 72.7 percent of the listed total, with bovine meat at 73,178 thousand tonnes in third.

China and India together contributed 68.6 percent of the five-year net gain, while Myanmar's decline contrasts with the overall increase. The single-year increase was shared across the largest reporters with no significant offsetting decline.

China Holds 29.6 Percent as Poultry and Pigmeat Take 72.7 Percent

The 2023 table is led by China at 104,617 thousand tonnes, with the United States second at 41,926 and Brazil third at 22,079. Russia and India complete the top five at 12,328 and 11,679 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 29.6 percent of the 353,793-thousand-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 47.7 percent of the listed total, the top five 54.4 percent and the top ten 63.9 percent. The composition splits 38.4 percent poultry, 34.3 percent pigmeat, 20.7 percent bovine meat, 5.0 percent mutton and goat meat and 1.7 percent other meat. Per capita, Tonga's 156.95 kilograms per person per year from 16 thousand tonnes lead Mongolia at 136.14 kilograms.

China Adds 5,000 Thousand Tonnes in a 2.6 Percent Annual Rise

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 344,898 thousand tonnes to 353,793 thousand tonnes, a gain of 8,895 thousand tonnes (2.6 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 5,000 thousand tonnes (up 5.0 percent), Brazil added 793 thousand tonnes (up 3.7 percent), Russia added 461 thousand tonnes (up 3.9 percent), India added 349 thousand tonnes (up 3.1 percent), Türkiye added 316 thousand tonnes (up 7.9 percent), Mexico added 275 thousand tonnes (up 2.8 percent), Vietnam added 262 thousand tonnes (up 4.5 percent) and Pakistan added 243 thousand tonnes (up 4.8 percent).

All eight of the largest absolute movers gained, and no reporter declined by more than 200 thousand tonnes, so the 2.6 percent rise describes spread growth rather than a concentrated surge with offsets. China's gain alone equals 56.2 percent of the net annual increase.

China Supplies 53.3 Percent of a 9.1 Percent Five-Year Gain

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 324,372 thousand tonnes to 353,793 thousand tonnes, a gain of 29,421 thousand tonnes (9.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 736 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 15,678 thousand tonnes (up 17.6 percent), India added 4,495 thousand tonnes (up 62.6 percent), Vietnam added 1,902 thousand tonnes (up 45.6 percent), Türkiye added 1,378 thousand tonnes (up 47.0 percent), Russia added 1,080 thousand tonnes (up 9.6 percent), Mexico added 1,014 thousand tonnes (up 11.1 percent) and Brazil added 1,003 thousand tonnes (up 4.8 percent), while Myanmar fell 2,086 thousand tonnes (down 64.8 percent).

China contributes 53.3 percent of the five-year net increase and India 15.3 percent, so the two together account for 68.6 percent. Myanmar's fall from 3,217 to 1,131 thousand tonnes removed nearly two thirds of its 2019 supply and stands as by far the largest decline in the comparison.

What Does the Meat Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Meat item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined meat total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums poultry, pigmeat, bovine meat, mutton and goat meat, and other meat, and each of those items is also covered in a separate article.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why meat looks concentrated in populous countries by total but in Pacific and Central Asian reporters per person.

Meat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the 176 reporters with reported values recorded a combined 353,793 thousand tonnes of listed meat food supply. China had the largest total at 104,617 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 41,926 and Brazil at 22,079 thousand tonnes. Tonga had the highest per-capita food supply at 156.95 kilograms per person per year. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of meat actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Meat from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 353,793 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the meat aggregate; individual meat items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do poultry and pigmeat dominate the meat total?

Poultry at 135,809 thousand tonnes and pigmeat at 121,223 thousand tonnes together hold 72.7 percent of the 353,793-thousand-tonne listed total in 2023. Bovine meat follows at 73,178 thousand tonnes, with mutton and goat meat and other meat far smaller. The figures show the composition of the supply, but they do not explain its causes.

How does meat supply differ between total and per-capita rankings?

Total rankings reflect the amount of listed meat food supply across a reporter, while per-capita rankings adjust that quantity for population. This is why China leads by total supply, while Tonga leads on a per-person basis.

Is the food supply of meat the same as meat eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
