Meat of Buffalo, Fresh or Chilled Consumption by Country
India had the largest reported food supply of fresh or chilled buffalo meat in 2023, at 3,329,973 tonnes, followed by Pakistan at 1,220,000 tonnes and China at 721,049 tonnes. Pakistan ranked first in per-capita supply, at 13.50 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts.
Vietnam placed fourth at 259,871 tonnes, with Egypt fifth at 210,817 and Iraq sixth at 123,224. Nepal, the Philippines, Italy and Venezuela closed the top ten between 39,221 and 116,487 tonnes. The top three held 83.3 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 90.7 percent. India had the highest listed food supply, while Pakistan had the highest per-capita food supply. Nepal lost 77,576 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 40.0 percent to 116,487 tonnes. Oman went from 16,483 tonnes to a reported zero. Bangladesh shed 8,958 tonnes, down 55.9 percent. Vietnam added 52,490 tonnes, up 25.3 percent. India added 39,939 tonnes, up 1.2 percent. Pakistan added 35,000 tonnes, up 3.0 percent. China added 27,810 tonnes, up 4.0 percent. Iraq added 23,973 tonnes, up 24.2 percent. The 55 countries present in both years rose from 6,252,014 tonnes to 6,327,651 tonnes, up 75,637 tonnes, or 1.2 percent, with two arrivals carrying 2,890 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 48 countries present in both years doubled from 3,135,474 tonnes to 6,304,739 tonnes, up 3,169,265 tonnes, or 101.1 percent. India added 2,804,407 tonnes, up 533.6 percent from 525,566, accounting for 88.5 percent of the net gain. Vietnam added 207,871 tonnes, up 399.8 percent. Pakistan added 135,000 tonnes, up 12.4 percent. China added 86,434 tonnes, up 13.6 percent. Iraq added 45,534 tonnes, up 58.6 percent. Venezuela added 20,051 tonnes, up 104.6 percent. Nepal lost 107,070 tonnes, down 47.9 percent. Myanmar shed 21,073 tonnes, down 42.8 percent. Four countries left with 7,435 tonnes, against nine arrivals with 25,802. Pakistan's 13.50 grams a day beat Nepal's 10.75 in second and Iraq's 8.73 in third. Laos sat fourth at 7.87 grams, with Vietnam at 7.09 and Bhutan at 6.91. India, Mauritius, Comoros and Egypt followed below 6.4 grams. India, first by volume, placed only seventh per person. Pakistan ranked second by volume and first per person. Fresh or chilled buffalo meat for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Oman reported zero in 2023 after 16,483 tonnes in 2022. Nepal fell two-fifths lately and 47.9 percent across five years, yet still reports over one hundred thousand tonnes. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts mark tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for fresh buffalo meat across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and zero bases use none. The universe counts 61 countries minus aggregates, 57 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 6,330,541 tonnes is the sum of the 57 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
