China Records the Largest Annual Decline

China lost 65,831 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 21.4 percent. Spain lost 2,897 tonnes, down 8.1 percent, and Italy shed 2,502 tonnes, down 9.8 percent. Hungary added 485 tonnes, up 40.3 percent, Ukraine added 1,699 tonnes, up 25.4 percent, and Rwanda added 2,089 tonnes, up 195.1 percent. The 96 countries with a value in both years fell from 565,594 tonnes to 496,869 tonnes, down 68,725 tonnes, or 12.2 percent, with Vietnam joining the comparison and none leaving it.

China Leads the Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 91 countries with a value in both years fell from 712,468 tonnes to 496,802 tonnes, down 215,666 tonnes, or 30.3 percent. China recorded the largest decline, losing 182,092 tonnes, down 43.0 percent. France shed 21,212 tonnes, down 52.4 percent, and Spain gave up 15,868 tonnes, down 32.7 percent. Slovakia added 3,784 tonnes from 399.87 tonnes, Czechia added 12,468 tonnes from 682.24 tonnes, and Hungary added 692.39 tonnes. Six countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while seven left it.

Czechia Leads Rabbit Meat Supply per Person

Czechia recorded 3.33 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Sierra Leone at 2.60 grams in second and Gabon at 2.31 grams in third. Slovakia sat fourth at 2.08 grams.

What the Rabbit Meat Data Measures

Fresh or chilled rabbit and hare meat available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

Five countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including Guinea after 0.22 tonnes in 2022, the Marshall Islands after 0.02 tonnes, and Nigeria after 0.26 tonnes. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the eleven rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for meat of rabbits and hares, fresh or chilled, over 2019-2023. Of the 108 country rows, 97 reported a value in 2023 and 92 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 96 countries for 2022-2023 and 91 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the highest rabbit and hare meat food supply?

China ranked first in 2023, with about 48.6 percent of the listed total, while Egypt ranked second and Spain third by volume that year overall.

Who trails Czechia per person?

Czechia led at 3.33 grams per person per day, ahead of Sierra Leone at 2.60 grams and Gabon at 2.31 grams in the 2023 figures.

Why do some countries show zero or missing values?

A reported zero is different from a blank entry, which means no value is available in the dataset, and neither should automatically be read as proof that no rabbit or hare meat was eaten.

How far did the listed total fall over five years?

Among the 91 countries with values in both years, the shared total fell from 712,468 tonnes to 496,802 tonnes, a decline of 215,666 tonnes, or 30.3 percent.

Is this what people actually ate?

No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual individual intake, so they describe national availability rather than what each person consumed in each country.
