Metallurgical Coke Imports by Country
Metallurgical coke imports by country measures the amount of metallurgical coke imported by each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. Metallurgical coke is not mined; it is manufactured by heating metallurgical coal in coke ovens. It is primarily used in steelmaking, so its production and trade are closely linked to the steel industry. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 174 countries with a reported 2024 value and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 31.423 Mmt in 2024, up from 29.469 Mmt in 2023.
The map shows the distribution of metallurgical coke imports in 2024, while the table provides the complete 2019-2024 series. India was the largest importer of metallurgical coke in 2024, accounting for about 16% of the world total. India and Brazil together accounted for about 27%, while the top three countries accounted for about 35%. The top five accounted for about 48%, and the top ten for about 64%, showing that global metallurgical coke imports were distributed across several major markets. India's imports were about 1.6 times higher than Brazil's, the second-largest importer. India was the largest metallurgical coke importer in 2024, with 5.135 Mmt, followed by Brazil with 3.276 Mmt and Indonesia with 2.590 Mmt. Germany ranked fourth with 2.525 Mmt, while Türkiye ranked fifth with 1.434 Mmt. The United Kingdom and Canada followed with 1.180 Mmt and 1.131 Mmt, respectively. Together, the top five accounted for about 47.6% of the world total, leaving just over half of reported imports to the remaining countries. Metallurgical coke imports were concentrated among a relatively small group of countries in 2024. India was the largest importer in Asia, while Türkiye was among the leading importers in Europe. In North America, Canada was the largest reported importer with 1.131 Mmt, while the United States reported 0.116 Mmt. Overall, the figures show that international metallurgical coke trade is distributed across several major steelmaking markets rather than being dominated by a single country. India recorded the largest increase in metallurgical coke imports, rising from 3.620 Mmt in 2023 to 5.135 Mmt in 2024. This was an increase of 1.515 Mmt, or about 41.8%. Brazil also increased by 0.789 Mmt, while Türkiye rose by 0.523 Mmt. The United Kingdom recorded the largest decline, falling from 1.781 Mmt to 1.180 Mmt, a decrease of 0.601 Mmt. The world total increased from 29.469 Mmt to 31.423 Mmt, an increase of 1.954 Mmt, or about 6.6%. The reported world total increased from 25.321 Mmt in 2019 to 31.423 Mmt in 2024, reaching a low of 24.062 Mmt during the period. India's imports increased from 3.250 Mmt in 2019 to 5.135 Mmt in 2024, while Brazil's rose from 1.307 Mmt to 3.276 Mmt. The data shows that both countries increased their import volumes over the period, while India's position as the largest importer remained ahead of Brazil. Metallurgical coke is manufactured by heating metallurgical coal in coke ovens and is primarily used in steelmaking. Unlike raw coal, coke is a processed fuel and reducing agent with properties suited to blast-furnace steel production. Its international trade therefore reflects demand from steelmaking industries as well as the availability of domestic coke production. The EIA reports metallurgical coke separately from other coal types, allowing its trade to be examined independently. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual metallurgical coke imports in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries may differ slightly from the reported world total because of rounding. This page covers metallurgical coke imports only and does not include other coal types, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do some steelmakers import coke instead of coal?
Some steel plants lack coke ovens and may find it more practical to import ready-made coke rather than produce it from metallurgical coal.
How does coke import trade differ from coal import trade?
Metallurgical coke is a processed product used mainly in steelmaking, while coal is traded for a much wider range of energy and industrial uses.
Why do some countries show zero coke imports?
Zero indicates that the source reports zero imports, while an empty cell indicates that no value is reported.
