Number of Airports by Country (2026)
The number of airports a country has depends on many things: how large it is, how many people live there, how its communities are spread out, and what role air travel plays in connecting them. Some countries have thousands of airports. Others have one or two. The data comes from the OurAirports database and covers 238 countries and territories, with a total of 47,970 airports classified as large, medium, or small.
Across the world, the vast majority of these facilities are small airports. Medium and large airports make up a much smaller share of the total.
Countries With the Most Airports
The United States has 16,169 airports — more than any other country by a wide margin. Of these, 95 are classified as large, 822 as medium, and 15,252 as small. Small airports account for the overwhelming majority of the country's total.
Brazil ranks second with 5,656 airports, including 28 large and 110 medium. Australia follows with 2,279 airports (16 large, 177 medium).
Mexico (1,578), Canada (1,501), France (1,190), the United Kingdom (1,055), Russia (942), Germany (843), and Argentina (803) round out the top ten.

Countries With the Most Large Airports
The United States also leads in large airports with 95. China is second with 69 large airports, followed by Russia (44) and India (43). Mexico and Japan are tied at 29 each, then Brazil (28), Italy (25), Germany (22), and Spain (21). China stands out here, with 69 large airports among its 573 total.
Countries With the Most Medium Airports
The United States has 822 medium airports, far more than any other country. China follows with 266, then Canada (237) and Russia (211). Australia (177), France (118), Brazil (110), and India (96) also rank high. Canada and Russia stand out for having particularly large numbers of medium airports in the dataset.
Countries With the Most Small Airports
Small airports dominate the global total, and the ranking here closely mirrors the overall list. The United States has 15,252 small airports — more than the total number of airports in any other country. Brazil follows with 5,518, Australia with 2,086, and Mexico with 1,507. Canada (1,251), France (1,055), the United Kingdom (967), and Germany (768) are next. Papua New Guinea, with 551 small airports out of 572 total, is a notable example: almost all of its airports are classified as small.
Large, Medium, and Small Airports
The dataset groups airports into three categories: large, medium, and small. These classifications describe the airport type used in the OurAirports database and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of passenger traffic or scheduled commercial service.
The distribution between these categories varies significantly across countries. Vietnam (61%), Georgia (60%), and China (58%) have relatively high shares of large and medium airports. At the other end of the spectrum, Papua New Guinea has 572 airports but only 21 are classified as large or medium; the remaining 551 are small airports. Indonesia (623 airports, 19 large) and Kenya (344 airports, 4 large) show comparable patterns, where small airstrips make up the overwhelming majority.
The United States, despite having 95 large airports, still sees 94% of its total classified as small.
Airport Infrastructure Around the World
The global distribution of airports shown in the dataset reflects a combination of geography, history, and economic development. Large countries tend to have more airports, and countries with challenging terrain or widely dispersed populations often have higher numbers of small airstrips. The distribution of airports across countries can also vary with geography and the way populations are spread out.
Countries with highly centralized transport networks — especially smaller or more densely populated ones — tend to have fewer but larger facilities.

Methodology
The statistics are based on the OurAirports database. Airport records were grouped by country using the iso_country field, and counted according to their type value. Only records classified as large_airport, medium_airport, or small_airport were included. Heliports, seaplane bases, balloonports, closed facilities, and other types were excluded. The total number of airports for each country is calculated as the sum of its large, medium, and small airports. The dataset contains 238 countries and territories and a total of 47,970 airports.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the most airports?
The United States has the most airports with 16,169, including 95 large, 822 medium, and 15,252 small facilities.
How many airports are included in the dataset?
The dataset includes 47,970 airports across 238 countries and territories. Of these, 1,172 are large airports, 4,101 are medium airports, and 42,697 are small airports.
What is the difference between large, medium, and small airports?
The dataset groups airports into three type categories. These classifications describe the airport type recorded in the OurAirports database and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of passenger traffic or scheduled commercial service availability.
Are all airports in the dataset passenger airports?
No. The dataset categorizes airports as large, medium, or small but does not indicate which ones offer scheduled commercial passenger flights. Many small airports serve general aviation, cargo, private, or emergency services rather than commercial passengers.
How many countries and territories are included?
The dataset covers 238 countries and territories. This includes sovereign nations as well as dependent territories, overseas departments, and other geographic entities that have their own airport records in the database.
