Oil Tanker Fleet by Country (2026)

The oil tanker fleet measures the dead weight tonnage of oil tankers registered under a country's flag, expressed in thousands of tons. It reflects the scale of the tanker capacity sailing under a national flag, driven by open-registry registration as well as by the fleets of oil producers and trading nations. The statistics are based on the UNCTADstat database. The dataset covers 196 countries and territories, and 195 of them report figures for 2026, with a combined fleet of 669,523 thousand dwt.

Countries With the Largest Oil Tanker Fleet in 2026

The Marshall Islands recorded the largest oil tanker fleet in 2026 at 115,949 thousand dwt. Liberia followed with 99,347, ahead of Panama (58,790) and Hong Kong (36,784). Greece (32,729), Malta (31,131), Singapore (29,148), China (21,655), the Bahamas (20,291), and Saudi Arabia (16,360) complete the top ten.

The oil tanker fleet is concentrated in a small number of open-registry economies. The Marshall Islands alone accounts for about 17 percent of the tanker capacity in the dataset, and the top five countries together account for about 51 percent. Among the 195 countries and territories with 2026 data, 13 record a tanker fleet above 10,000 thousand dwt.

Oil Tanker Fleet Around the World

In Asia, China (21,655 thousand dwt) records the largest tanker fleet, followed by Japan (9,136) and India (9,054). Indonesia (7,690) and South Korea (2,872) are smaller, while Singapore (29,148) and Hong Kong (36,784) rank near the top of the global table thanks to open registries.

In Europe, Greece (32,729) holds the largest tanker fleet, followed by Malta (31,131). Denmark (5,828), Norway (5,471), and Portugal (4,532) are the next largest, while France (2,474), Italy (1,867), Germany (347), and the Netherlands (142) operate smaller tanker fleets.

In the Middle East, Iran (15,208) and Saudi Arabia (16,360) hold the largest tanker fleets, reflecting their oil exports, with Kuwait (4,365) also significant. In Africa, Liberia (99,347) dominates the global ranking, while Nigeria (2,588) and Egypt (508) are the largest national fleets.

In the Americas, Panama (58,790) and the Bahamas (20,291) lead, while the United States (4,452) and Brazil (2,691) operate smaller tanker fleets. In Oceania, Australia records only 23 thousand dwt of tanker capacity.

Largest Changes in Oil Tanker Fleet, 2021–2026

The Marshall Islands recorded the largest increase between 2021 and 2026, rising from 101,995 to 115,949 thousand dwt (up 13,954). Russia grew from 3,656 to 9,706 (up 6,050), while several small registries expanded rapidly, including Cameroon (up 11,345) and Sierra Leone (up 9,513), though from low bases.

Among the largest fleets, Greece recorded the biggest decline, down 8,946 to 32,729 thousand dwt, followed by Hong Kong (down 8,302), the Bahamas (down 6,319), Malta (down 5,787), and Singapore (down 5,522). Panama also fell by 4,103.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the UNCTADstat database, indicator Oil tankers, which measures the dead weight tonnage of oil tankers registered under each country's flag in thousand tons, as part of the merchant fleet statistics. Values refer to the beginning of each year. The main comparison uses 2026 data where available, and the latest available year for countries without a 2026 observation. In the table, a zero reflects a nil or negligible fleet, while an empty cell means that no value was reported; the two are never mixed up in the calculations.
