Other Meat Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 1,081 thousand tonnes of listed other-meat food supply, 18.3 percent of a 5,892-thousand-tonne total spread across 167 reporters. Both comparison windows net to almost nothing: plus 95 thousand tonnes on the year, plus 141 over five years. Papua New Guinea recorded the highest per-capita figure at 42.60 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
China leads at 1,081 thousand tonnes, 1.86 times Russia at 582 thousand tonnes. Papua New Guinea tops the per-capita ranking at 42.60 kilograms per person per year from 443 thousand tonnes, ahead of Mongolia at 23.61 kilograms, and ranks third by total too. The listed total changed only modestly in both comparison windows: it rose by 95 thousand tonnes between 2022 and 2023 and by 141 thousand tonnes since 2019. China leads at 1,081 thousand tonnes but declined in both periods. Papua New Guinea ranks third by total and first per capita, with a listed food supply of 42.60 kilograms per person per year. Between 2022 and 2023, Kenya, Brazil, Chile, Kazakhstan, Italy and Saudi Arabia added between 8 and 32 thousand tonnes each, while China, Germany and others gave back single and double digits. Since 2019, Russia, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, Mongolia and Kenya account for most of the gains against China's 97-thousand-tonne fall. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other meat actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by China at 1,081 thousand tonnes, with Russia second at 582 and Papua New Guinea third at 443. The United States and India follow at 271 and 195 thousand tonnes. No reporter reaches 20 percent of the listed total. China holds 18.3 percent of the 5,892-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 35.7 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 43.7 percent and the top ten 58.0 percent. More than forty percent of the total sits outside the top ten, spread across 157 smaller reporters. Among the 167 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 5,797 thousand tonnes to 5,892 thousand tonnes, a gain of 95 thousand tonnes (1.6 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 167 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Kenya added 32 thousand tonnes (up 56.1 percent), Brazil added 25 thousand tonnes (up 32.5 percent), Chile added 11 thousand tonnes (up 68.8 percent), Kazakhstan added 10 thousand tonnes (up 5.9 percent), Italy added 8 thousand tonnes (up 12.1 percent) and Saudi Arabia added 8 thousand tonnes (up 13.1 percent), while China fell 41 thousand tonnes (down 3.7 percent) and Germany fell 9 thousand tonnes (down 10.3 percent). For the 167 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 5,751 thousand tonnes to 5,892 thousand tonnes, a gain of 141 thousand tonnes (2.5 percent). The 2019 total includes 168 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 167; Cuba, with 51 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Russia added 89 thousand tonnes (up 18.1 percent), Kazakhstan added 63 thousand tonnes (up 53.8 percent), Papua New Guinea added 29 thousand tonnes (up 7.0 percent) and Mongolia added 28 thousand tonnes (up 52.8 percent), while China fell 97 thousand tonnes (down 8.2 percent), France fell 44 thousand tonnes (down 55.7 percent), Saudi Arabia fell 40 thousand tonnes (down 36.7 percent) and Kenya fell 21 thousand tonnes (down 19.1 percent). Excluding China and Russia, no other reporter changed by more than 63 thousand tonnes over the five-year period. Kazakhstan recorded the largest increase among the remaining reporters at 63 thousand tonnes, while France had the largest decline at 44 thousand tonnes. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Meat, Other recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of other meat people actually ate. Beef, pork, poultry and other meats recorded under their own items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed other-meat food supply among the 167 reporters with reported values, at 1,081 thousand tonnes. Russia ranked second at 582 thousand tonnes, while Papua New Guinea ranked third at 443 thousand tonnes. Papua New Guinea had the highest per-capita other-meat food supply at 42.60 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of other meat actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Meat, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 168 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 5,892 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 167 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Other Meat Food Supply at a Glance

Other Meat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this table nearly flat in both windows?
Listed supply moved by 95 thousand tonnes (up 1.6 percent) between 2022 and 2023 and 141 thousand tonnes (up 2.5 percent) since 2019. Gains and declines nearly cancel in both windows, with no single reporter dominating either move.
Why does Papua New Guinea rank high twice in other meat?
Papua New Guinea ranked third by total at 443 thousand tonnes and first per capita at 42.60 kilograms per person in 2023. Mongolia followed per capita at 23.61 kilograms, while China, first by total, recorded 0.76 kilograms.
Is the food supply of other meat the same as meat eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
