Processed Cheese Consumption by Country

Germany reported 121,986 tonnes of processed cheese in 2023, 10.3 percent of the annual listed consumption total. Türkiye followed on 120,143 tonnes, France on 111,862, while El Salvador led per person at 12.99 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 1,179,365 tonnes across 166 countries, 164 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

In 2023, Germany had the largest reported processed cheese food supply at 121,986 tonnes, followed by Türkiye at 120,143 tonnes and France at 111,862 tonnes. Germany accounted for 10.3 percent of the listed 2023 total of 1,179,365 tonnes. El Salvador had the highest reported per-person supply at 12.99 grams per person per day, ahead of Switzerland at 12.49 grams. The figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, not actual intake.

Egypt placed fourth at 99,742 tonnes, with Italy fifth at 83,418 and Spain sixth at 77,725. Switzerland, China, El Salvador and Australia closed the top ten between 27,893 and 40,446 tonnes. The top three held 30.0 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 45.5 percent. Germany had the highest listed food supply at 121,986 tonnes, while El Salvador had the highest per-capita food supply at 12.99 grams per person.

• Türkiye recorded the largest absolute increase, adding 13,574 tonnes, or 12.7 percent.
• Yemen doubled to 13,394 tonnes, adding 7,858 tonnes, or 141.9 percent.
• The United States multiplied from 1,218 tonnes to 7,592 tonnes, adding 6,374 tonnes, or 523.3 percent.
• Uruguay recorded the largest absolute decline, losing 4,725 tonnes, or 89.9 percent.

Uruguay Slips in Processed Cheese

Uruguay lost 4,725 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 89.9 percent to 530 tonnes. The United Kingdom lost 4,702 tonnes, down 14.9 percent. Germany shed 4,244 tonnes, down 3.4 percent. Türkiye added 13,574 tonnes, up 12.7 percent. Yemen added 7,858 tonnes, up 141.9 percent. The United States added 6,374 tonnes, up 523.3 percent. The 164 countries present in both years eased from 1,180,376 tonnes to 1,179,365 tonnes, down 1,011 tonnes, with no departures and no arrivals.

Türkiye Rises from Zero over Five-Year Processed Cheese

Between 2019 and 2023, the 162 countries present in both years rose from 990,776 tonnes to 1,179,362 tonnes, up 188,586 tonnes, or 19.0 percent. Türkiye added 120,143 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero. Egypt added 38,513 tonnes, up 62.9 percent. Australia added 20,538 tonnes, up 279.2 percent. Saudi Arabia lost 11,890 tonnes, down 48.7 percent. Spain gave up 6,847 tonnes, down 8.1 percent. Italy shed 6,320 tonnes, down 7.0 percent. Two countries left with 876 tonnes, against two arrivals with 2.

El Salvador Leads Processed Cheese Supply per Person

El Salvador's 12.99 grams a day edged Switzerland's 12.49 in second and cleared Finland's 8.27 in third. Nicaragua sat fourth at 8.24 grams, with Malta at 6.84 and Mauritius at 6.69. Oman, French Polynesia, Belize and Antigua and Barbuda followed below 6.7 grams. Germany, first by volume, sat far down the per-person table.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts mark tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for processed cheese across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. The universe counts 166 countries minus aggregates, 164 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 1,179,365 tonnes is the sum of the 164 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
