Taro Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record taro available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 101 reporters; 97 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 9,287,184 tonnes. Nigeria took the 2023 lead from China with a 138.4 percent five-year climb — driving most of the table's 33.6 percent expansion.
Nigeria reported the largest 2023 supply at 3,368,146 tonnes, while Samoa recorded the highest per-capita figure at 210.62 grams per person per day. China reported 1,524,891 tonnes in 2019 against Nigeria's 1,412,622; by 2023 Nigeria reported 3,368,146 against China's 1,463,957 — up 1,955,524 tonnes (up 138.4 percent) for Nigeria, down 60,934 (down 4.0 percent) for China. Nigeria's 2023 supply leads the table at 36.3 percent of the listed total, 2.30 times China in second. Ethiopia follows at 1,175,507 with Ghana at 1,094,972; the top three hold 64.7 percent, the top five 84.2 percent and the top ten 92.7 percent. Cameroon, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Egypt, Madagascar and the Philippines complete the ten. The common total moved from 6,942,868 tonnes to 9,274,029, up 2,331,161 tonnes or 33.6 percent across 88 reporters. Nigeria's 1,955,524-tonne gain is 83.9 percent of that increase, with Ethiopia adding 271,748 (up 30.1 percent), Ghana 66,089 (up 6.4 percent), Cameroon 41,945 (up 6.3 percent) and Egypt 41,094 (up 44.2 percent); Rwanda added 18,606 (up 11.7 percent) while Laos fell 17,934 (down 35.9 percent). Three reporters left at zero while nine entered with 13,156 tonnes between them. The common total rose from 9,037,486 tonnes to 9,287,184, up 249,698 tonnes or 2.8 percent across 95 reporters. Ethiopia added 212,895 tonnes (up 22.1 percent) — 85.3 percent of the net gain — with Nigeria adding 54,376 (up 1.6 percent), Cameroon 21,236 (up 3.1 percent) and Ghana 9,095 (up 0.8 percent); China gave back 18,237 (down 1.2 percent), Rwanda 10,144 (down 5.4 percent), Nicaragua 6,127 (down 57.6 percent) and the Philippines 5,079 (down 4.7 percent). Two reporters entered with 0.04 tonnes between them; none left. Samoa's 210.62 grams per person per day head the per-capita table from 16,656 tonnes, with Fiji at 188.86 from 63,705 and the Solomon Islands at 156.8: the Pacific island reporters fill the top ranks while Africa fills the volume table. Ghana bridges the two at fourth on both lists (1,094,972 tonnes and 88.79 grams), with Cameroon seventh per person at 68.85 from fifth by volume; Vanuatu at 88.16, Sao Tome and Principe at 77.13, Papua New Guinea at 67.51, Gabon at 51.9 and Tonga at 43.97 complete the ten. The FAO item covers taro, not yautia and not yams, which have their own articles; the three are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. Nigeria had the largest 2023 listed taro supply at 3,368,146 tonnes, while Samoa had the highest per-capita figure at 210.62 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 9,287,184 tonnes across 97 reporters, up 33.6 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. One hundred one reporters make up the universe, each with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023; only reporters reach the tables, and World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are kept out, with China standing for the China reporter. The earlier endpoint year anchors every percentage across reporters present at both ends. Zero-base years give no percentage, and small-base percentages should be weighed against the base. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity tracks taro in both measures: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 to 2023. Availability for human consumption in the reference year is the quantity of interest, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 9,287,184 tonnes sums the 97 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published.
