Wheat Germ Consumption by Country
Pakistan's 572,374 tonnes top listed wheat germ supply in 2023, with Indonesia at 184,005 and Algeria at 92,968 behind it. Eleven reporters entered the five-year comparison with a combined 147,666 tonnes — more than the common-universe gain itself — including Algeria (92,968 tonnes) and South Korea (51,564) from no 2019 value. Pakistan, the largest reporter throughout, added 36,443 tonnes for 36.9 percent of the common net gain. Per person Pakistan also runs first at 6.34 grams a day.
Pakistan's 572,374 tonnes beat Indonesia's 184,005 by 3.11 times; Algeria holds third at 92,968 and South Africa fourth at 67,573. The per-person order mirrors the top: Pakistan at 6.34 grams a day, Lebanon at 5.88 and Australia at 5.87. Wheat germ is reported as food by 58 reporters, and the 2023 order blends established names with newcomers lacking any 2019 value. The 1,258,988-tonne listed total spans 57 reporters with 2023 values. Thailand's 65.7 percent latest-year climb contrasts with Indonesia's 7.1 percent fall. The United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, New Zealand and Albania each grew from near-zero reported values into the thousands of tonnes, and apart from Pakistan these jumps from tiny starts produced several of the largest absolute five-year gains. Pakistan opens the 2023 table at 572,374 tonnes (45.5 percent of 1,258,988), Indonesia at 184,005 and Algeria at 92,968. South Africa and Australia come next at 67,573 and 56,649 tonnes. The top three reporters accounted for 67.5 percent of the listed total, the top five 77.3 percent and the top ten 89.6 percent. Algeria and South Korea, third and sixth, had no reported 2019 value. Per capita, Pakistan's 6.34 grams per person per day lead Lebanon at 5.88 grams, so the volume leader is also the per-capita leader. Across the 57 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 1,237,663 tonnes to 1,258,988 tonnes, up 21,325 tonnes or 1.7 percent. The two years share the same 57 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Thailand added 12,123 tonnes (up 65.7 percent), Pakistan 8,820 (up 1.6 percent), Sri Lanka 3,452 (up 29.0 percent), Australia 3,082 (up 5.8 percent), Malaysia 2,840 (up 9.4 percent) and Zimbabwe 2,708 (up 40.0 percent), while Indonesia fell 14,046 tonnes (down 7.1 percent) and Algeria 5,574 (down 5.7 percent). Thailand's rise from 18,447 to 30,570 tonnes and Indonesia's fall from 198,051 to 184,005 nearly offset each other; Pakistan's 8,820-tonne increase was the second-largest gain after Thailand's. For the 46 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 1,012,532 tonnes to 1,111,322 tonnes, up 98,790 tonnes or 9.8 percent. The 2019 universe holds 47 reporters with values against 57 in 2023; Djibouti, with a fraction of a tonne in 2019, has no 2023 value, while 11 reporters entered with a combined 147,666 tonnes. Pakistan added 36,443 tonnes (up 6.8 percent), the United Arab Emirates 12,831 tonnes from 44 tonnes, Lebanon 12,397 tonnes from under 2 tonnes, New Zealand 8,520 tonnes from just over 1 tonne, Zimbabwe 4,524 tonnes (up 91.3 percent), Malaysia 4,337 tonnes (up 15.1 percent) and Albania 3,921 tonnes from 0.3 tonnes, while Sri Lanka fell 4,889 tonnes (down 24.2 percent). Pakistan contributes 36.9 percent of the common five-year net increase. The entrants' combined 147,666 tonnes exceed that net gain, which means the full-period listed total grew faster than the common-universe comparison shows: Algeria alone added 92,968 tonnes and South Korea 51,564 without any 2019 baseline. Counted here is the Germ of wheat item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A total of this kind is not an estimate of what people actually ate. Wheat milling by-products recorded under other items sit outside this figure. The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into grams available per person during the day. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, and here both views agree: Pakistan leads by total and per person. Pakistan's 2023 wheat germ total of 572,374 tonnes led Indonesia by 3.11 times across 57 reporters, with per-person leadership at 6.34 grams a day to match. Algeria (92,968 tonnes) completes a top three holding 67.5 percent. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. The file counts 58 reporters holding a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023; the tables print reporters only, without World, regional or China (aggregate) rows, and China here denotes the China reporter. For reporters present in both endpoint years, percentages take the earlier year as base. Zero-base years get no percentage, and tiny-base multiples should be read against the base. Country totals come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts element 5141 (food supply quantity, tonnes) and per-person values from element 665 (grams per capita per day), for germ of wheat across 2019-2023 — availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. A zero is a reported zero; a blank means nothing was reported. The 1,258,988-tonne listed total sums the 57 reporters carrying a 2023 value, in tonnes as FAO published them. Wheat Germ Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did the full-period total outgrow the common comparison?
Eleven reporters entered the five-year comparison with a combined 147,666 tonnes, including Algeria at 92,968 tonnes and South Korea at 51,564, neither with a 2019 value. The common-universe gain of 98,790 tonnes covers only the 46 reporters with values in both endpoint years.
How did near-zero reporters reach thousands of tonnes?
The United Arab Emirates rose from 44 tonnes in 2019 to 12,875 tonnes in 2023, Lebanon from under 2 tonnes to 12,399 and New Zealand from just over 1 tonne to 8,521. The figures record the size of these moves from near-zero reported values without identifying what caused them.
Is wheat germ supply the same as germ eaten?
No. The FAO measure counts food available for human consumption; it does not directly record how much people ate.
