Aluminum Production by Country
Aluminum production by country measures how much primary aluminum each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to smelter production, in line with the underlying sources; they measure the refined metal and are not the same as bauxite ore or alumina production. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for 2018-2023, built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 41 countries that record aluminum production in the period. 2025 figures are available individually for 12 countries, which produced a combined 67,210,000 tonnes in 2025, while the World total in the source stands at 74,000,000 tonnes. Most other countries retain their latest available Our World in Data figures, mostly from 2023.
Countries With the Largest Aluminum Production in 2025
China produced the most aluminum in 2025 with 45,000,000 tonnes. India ranked second with 4,200,000, followed by Russia (3,900,000), Canada (3,300,000), and the United Arab Emirates (2,700,000). Bahrain (1,600,000), Australia (1,500,000), Norway (1,300,000), Brazil (1,200,000), and Malaysia (1,100,000) complete the top ten.
Aluminum Production by Country
China alone accounted for about 61 percent of the World total in 2025, and China and India together for about 66 percent; the top five countries accounted for about 80 percent. China's output was about 10.7 times that of the second-largest producer. Ten countries produced at least 1 million tonnes.

Largest Changes in Aluminum Production, 2024-2025
China recorded the largest increase, rising from 44,000,000 tonnes in 2024 to 45,000,000 in 2025 (up 1,000,000). Brazil rose from 1,100,000 to 1,200,000 (up 100,000, about 9 percent), Malaysia from 1,050,000 to 1,100,000 (up 50,000), Russia by 20,000, the United Arab Emirates by 10,000, and Iceland by 8,000.
Australia recorded the largest decline, falling from 1,570,000 to 1,500,000 tonnes (down 70,000, about 4.5 percent). Bahrain and Canada each fell by 20,000, and the United States by 16,000.
The World total rose from 72,800,000 to 74,000,000 tonnes (up 1,200,000, about 1.6 percent), and China alone accounted for about 83 percent of that increase. The value for countries not listed individually rose from 6,680,000 to 7,000,000 tonnes. India and Norway remained unchanged at 4,200,000 and 1,300,000 tonnes.

Methodology
The 2018-2023 figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national aluminum production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; the majority of countries are not listed individually there and keep their Our World in Data series, mostly with 2023 as the latest year. Values refer to smelter production of primary aluminum, in tonnes, based on refined metal rather than bauxite ore or alumina, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country produces the most aluminum in 2025?
China produced the most aluminum in 2025 with 45,000,000 tonnes, followed by India (4,200,000) and Russia (3,900,000).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
The table lists 41 countries that record aluminum smelter production in the period. 2025 figures are available individually for 12 of them from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, while the rest report their latest available data, mostly from 2023.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures primary aluminum smelter production in tonnes, based on refined metal produced from alumina; bauxite ore and alumina production are separate measures.
Which country produces the least aluminum among those with 2025 data?
The United States recorded the smallest 2025 output at 660,000 tonnes. Among countries reporting 2023 data, Slovenia recorded the smallest at 1,487 tonnes; Spain and the Netherlands reported no output in 2023.
Why do most countries show 2023 figures?
2025 estimates are reported individually for 12 countries in the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026; most of the remaining countries are included in the source only under "Other countries" and keep their earlier series, mostly from 2023.
What is the difference between bauxite, alumina, and aluminum?
Bauxite is the ore, alumina is the refined oxide produced from bauxite, and aluminum is the metal produced from alumina in smelters. This statistic measures the last step, primary aluminum metal; bauxite and alumina production are reported separately in this dataset family.
