Natural Gas Production by Country
Natural gas production by country shows how much dry natural gas is produced in each country, measured in billion cubic feet (Bcf) per year. The figures refer to dry natural gas production, which is the gas remaining after processing removes natural gas liquids and impurities; gross gas production, vented and flared gas, and reinjected gas are separate measures reported by the same source. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics, which compiles national production reports from government and industry sources. The table covers 96 countries with a reported 2024 production value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 148,970 billion cubic feet in 2024, and the sum of the individually reported countries is 148,966, a difference of only 4 billion cubic feet attributable to source-level rounding.
Largest Natural Gas-Producing Countries in 2024
The United States produced the most natural gas in 2024 with 37,767 billion cubic feet. Russia ranked second with 22,673, followed by Iran (9,853), China (9,127), Canada (7,026), Qatar (6,002), Australia (5,374), Norway (4,623), Saudi Arabia (4,357), and Algeria (3,489).
The United States produced about 1.7 times more gas than Russia, the second-largest producer, and about 3.8 times more than the third-largest, Iran. Russia alone produced about 1.7 times the combined output of Canada and Qatar, the fifth and sixth producers. Two countries exceeded 10,000 billion cubic feet and nine exceeded 4,000 billion cubic feet in 2024.
Natural Gas Production by Country
The United States alone accounted for about 25 percent of the World total in 2024, while the United States and Russia together accounted for about 41 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 47 percent, the top five for about 58 percent, and the top ten for about 74 percent. Production is therefore concentrated in a small group of large producers, with the top five countries accounting for more than half of world output and the top ten for roughly three quarters.
Natural Gas Production Around the World
In North America, the United States (37,767) leads by a wide margin, ahead of Canada (7,026) and Mexico (1,105). In Europe, Russia (22,673) is the largest producer, followed by Norway (4,623), while the Netherlands (342) and Türkiye (80) are smaller producers.
In Asia, China (9,127) leads, ahead of Malaysia (2,846), Indonesia (2,465), and Pakistan (852); Azerbaijan produced 1,338 billion cubic feet. In the Middle East, Iran (9,853) leads, ahead of Qatar (6,002), Saudi Arabia (4,357), and the United Arab Emirates (2,098).
In Africa, Algeria (3,489) leads, ahead of Egypt (1,676) and Nigeria (1,380); in Oceania, Australia (5,374) is the dominant producer, ahead of New Zealand (118). Israel increased production from 363 billion cubic feet in 2019 to 940 in 2024.
Global Production Structure, 2019-2024
World production expanded from 142,862 billion cubic feet in 2019 to 148,970 in 2024, an increase of about 6,108 billion cubic feet, or 4.3 percent over five years. Growth was uneven across regions: the United States added 3,868 billion cubic feet, China added 2,794, Iran 1,559, and Canada 958, while Russia reduced its output by 2,363 and the Netherlands by 829.
China's production increased by about 44 percent from 2019 to 2024, Iran's by about 19 percent, and Canada's by about 16 percent, while Russia's output declined by about 9 percent. The combined share of the United States and Russia fell from about 41.3 percent in 2019 to 40.6 percent in 2024, while China's share rose from about 4.4 percent to 6.1 percent.
Largest Changes in Natural Gas Production, 2023-2024
Russia recorded the largest increase in the latest year, rising from 21,104 billion cubic feet in 2023 to 22,673 in 2024 (up 1,569, about 7.4 percent). China rose from 8,454 to 9,127 (up 673, about 8.0 percent), Norway by 277, and Iran by 176, while Algeria fell by 229. The World total rose from 146,749 to 148,970 billion cubic feet (up 2,221, about 1.5 percent).
The largest decline came from Algeria, falling from 3,718 to 3,489 billion cubic feet (down 229, about 6.2 percent). The United States fell from 37,803 to 37,767 (down 36, less than 1 percent), Qatar by 30, and Australia by 30.

Methodology
The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics, which compiles national natural gas production reports from government and industry sources. Values refer to dry natural gas production, in billion cubic feet per year; gross gas, vented and flared gas, and reinjected gas are reported separately by EIA and are not included here. The World total is the sum reported by the source and may differ slightly from the sum of the listed countries because of source-level rounding and independent country reports; for 2019, the difference is 210 billion cubic feet, and for 2024, it is only 4 billion cubic feet. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country produces the most natural gas in 2024?
The United States produced the most dry natural gas in 2024 with 37,767 billion cubic feet, followed by Russia (22,673) and Iran (9,853).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
The dataset includes 96 countries with a reported 2024 production value, covering 2019-2024 from EIA International Energy Statistics.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures dry natural gas production, in billion cubic feet per year; gross production, vented/flared gas, and reinjected gas are separate measures reported by EIA.
Which countries reported the lowest natural gas production in 2024?
Several countries reported 0 billion cubic feet in 2024 (including France, Yemen, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Suriname), meaning no dry gas production was reported for them.
How much did world production change between 2019 and 2024?
World production rose from 142,862 to 148,970 billion cubic feet (up about 4.3 percent), with the United States, China, and Iran accounting for most of the growth.
Why is the World total slightly different from the country sum?
The World total is the source's reported aggregate and differs from the sum of individually reported countries (148,966 vs 148,970 billion cubic feet) because of rounding and independent country reports.
What is the difference between dry and gross natural gas?
Dry natural gas is the gas remaining after natural gas liquids are removed; gross natural gas is the total gas produced before such processing. This indicator covers dry gas.
How much did China's natural gas production increase between 2019 and 2024?
China's output increased from 6,333 to 9,127 billion cubic feet (up about 44 percent), the largest relative increase among producers above 5,000 billion cubic feet in 2024.
