Animal or Vegetable Fats and Oils and Their Fractions, Chemically Modified Consumption by Country

In 2023, Belgium recorded the largest reported quantity of chemically modified animal or vegetable fats and oils, at 63,028 tonnes, followed by France at 58,603 tonnes and Canada at 32,435 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for about 93.8 percent of the listed 2023 total. The supplied data contains no per-capita values for 2023, so a country ranking by grams per person cannot be established for that year. These figures should be interpreted according to the FAO category and indicator definitions.

Which Countries Reported the Most Chemically Modified Fats and Oils?

Russia Records the Largest Annual Decline

Russia lost 52,716 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 98.4 percent to 880.26 tonnes. Brazil went from 1,524 tonnes to a reported zero, and Kuwait lost 1,003 tonnes, down 33.3 percent. France added 17,013 tonnes, up 40.9 percent, Canada added 32,435 tonnes from a reported zero, and Belgium added 55,805 tonnes, up 772.6 percent. The 37 countries with a value in both years rose from 108,720 tonnes to 161,608 tonnes, up 52,888 tonnes, or 48.6 percent, with Bolivia leaving while Belarus, Comoros, Georgia, Lebanon and Morocco entered.

Russia Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 22 countries with a value in both years fell from 92,780 tonnes to 1,650 tonnes, down 91,130 tonnes, or 98.2 percent. This result covers only that shared set and not the whole table. Russia recorded the largest decline, losing 89,102 tonnes, down 99.0 percent. Poland fell from 699.66 tonnes to a reported zero, and Vietnam from 559.91 tonnes to zero. Gambia added 6.30 tonnes from a reported zero, Grenada added 15.36 tonnes, up 60.5 percent, and Laos added 251.89 tonnes, up 198.6 percent. Twenty countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, including Belgium, France and Canada, while the Maldives left it.

What the Dataset Covers

The file covers animal or vegetable fats and oils and their fractions, chemically modified, as recorded in FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023. Of the 46 country rows, 42 reported a value in 2023 and 28 of those were above zero. The source label describes an industrial product type, so the figures are presented as reported SUA values without a consumption interpretation. The supplied 2023 data contains no usable per-capita values, with Guinea-Bissau the only non-blank entry at zero, so no per-person ranking exists for that year.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for this item over 2019-2023. Of the 46 country rows, 42 reported a value in 2023 and 28 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 37 countries for 2022-2023 and 22 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Belgium responsible for such a large share of the 2023 total?

Belgium accounts for 63,028 of the 164,228 tonnes listed for 2023, or about 38.4 percent, which reflects reported quantities rather than a measure of global production.

Why is Canada included in the 2023 ranking despite a zero in 2022?

Canada has a reported value of zero for 2022 and a positive quantity for 2023, so its absolute increase can be calculated while a percentage increase from zero remains undefined here.

Why is the five-year comparison much smaller than the 2023 total?

The five-year comparison includes only countries with reported values at both endpoints, so countries appearing only in 2023, including the three leaders, are excluded from it.

Are per-capita rankings available for 2023?

No. The supplied dataset contains no usable per-capita values for 2023, so countries cannot be ranked on that measure for the year in this file.

Do the figures represent actual consumption?

The interpretation depends on the FAO indicator and product classification, and food supply is not equivalent to the quantity people actually eat, so category definitions deserve a check.
