Mexico led the 2023 avocado food supply ranking with 1,503,414 tonnes, accounting for 16.8 percent of the listed total. Mexico Widens Its Avocados Lead

Avocado Supply Rose Sharply Over Five Years

Between 2019 and 2023, the 157 countries present in both years surged from 6,195,822 tonnes to 8,773,126 tonnes, up 2,577,304 tonnes, or 41.6 percent. Mexico added 548,197 tonnes, up 57.4 percent, accounting for 21.3 percent of the net gain. Indonesia added 443,840 tonnes, up 105.0 percent. Colombia added 426,821 tonnes, up 95.7 percent. Kenya added 195,851 tonnes, up 109.6 percent. The United States added 148,462 tonnes, up 13.4 percent. Brazil added 127,637 tonnes, up 69.2 percent. Peru added 64,218 tonnes, up 36.9 percent, and Spain 63,099 tonnes, up 72.7 percent. One country left the dataset with 3,195 tonnes, while ten countries appeared with a combined 195,020 tonnes in 2023.

Dominican Republic Leads Avocado Supply per Person

The Dominican Republic's 122.78 grams a day dwarfed Vanuatu's 47.89 in second and Colombia's 45.69 in third. Haiti sat fourth at 33.83 grams, with Grenada at 32.56 and Mexico at 31.75. Israel, Guyana, Peru and Kenya followed below 24 grams. Mexico pairs first-place tonnage with sixth-place per-person supply.

What the Avocado Food Supply Data Measures

Avocados for human consumption are tallied in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries with values only. No country accounted for one-sixth of the listed supply, leaving the upper end of the ranking relatively distributed. The per-person crown sits on a Caribbean island; the tonnage crown sits across the water in Mexico.

Nine of the 2023 top ten increased between 2019 and 2023, while Vietnam had no reported value in 2019.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts register tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for avocados across 2019-2023. Percentages reference the earlier year, and zero bases receive no percentage. The universe comprises 169 countries after aggregates are taken out, 167 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints qualify for comparisons. Reported zeros stay, blanks go missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
