Banana Production: 2024 Market Overview

In 2024, India led banana production in the listed countries with 37.6 million tonnes, equal to about 27% of the dataset total. China followed with 11.8 million tonnes, while Indonesia produced 9.26 million tonnes.

Regional Production Patterns

The banana ranking separates large domestic producers from export-oriented suppliers. India and China dominate production volume, while Ecuador's 7.59 million tonnes gives it a central role in traded banana supply.

• Asia: India accounted for about 27% of listed 2024 output, and China added another 8.4%. Both markets are mainly shaped by domestic demand, so production leadership does not automatically imply export leadership.
• Latin America: Ecuador produced 7.59 million tonnes, ahead of Guatemala at 2.84 million tonnes. Ecuador remains the key country to watch for export availability and cold-chain logistics.
• Africa: Angola reached 5.21 million tonnes, while Tanzania produced 3.27 million tonnes and Rwanda produced 2.44 million tonnes. These figures point to strong regional food demand as well as gradual commercialization.

Notable Mid-Tier Producers

Brazil remained a top-five producer with 7.05 million tonnes, while Kenya reached 2.06 million tonnes.

Risks & Yield Pressures

Banana production faces weather risk, input costs, and disease pressure. Panama disease and Fusarium wilt TR4 are especially important for commercial supply chains, so forecasts avoid extending short-term gains too aggressively in volatile country series.

2026 Outlook & Forecast Notes

The 2026 estimates keep India, China, and Indonesia at the top of the production table. Ecuador remains below the largest domestic producers by volume, but it is still one of the most important countries for internationally traded bananas.

• India: Estimated at 40 million tonnes by 2026, reflecting continued growth from the 2021-2024 trend.
• China: Estimated at 11.8 million tonnes by 2026, broadly in line with its recent production level.
• Indonesia: Estimated at 9.64 million tonnes by 2026, with moderate growth from its recent base.
• Ecuador: Estimated at 7.78 million tonnes by 2026, keeping it among the largest producers and a key export supplier.
