Barite Reserves by Country
The lead in the barite table changed hands in 2023, when China surged past Iran — and Iran's figure snapped back to 100,000 thousand metric tons a year later. Eight editions of the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries (2019-2026) supply the figures: estimated quantities that can be economically extracted. Reserves are distinct from what is mined in a given year. The ranking spans 8 countries (6 with reported 2025 values) and 402,000 thousand metric tons in listed 2025 reserves.
China (120,000 thousand metric tons), Iran (100,000) and Kazakhstan (85,000) hold about three-quarters of the listed total between them. India (51,000) follows, while Türkiye (34,000) follows well below the leaders and Russia (12,000) is about an order of magnitude below China.
Barite Reserves by Country
China was the only country to change in 2025, rising from 110,000 to 120,000 thousand metric tons (+9.1%).
The 2023 swap
Iran reported 100,000 thousand metric tons from 2020 through 2022, dropped to 38,000 for 2023, then returned to 100,000 in 2024. China did the opposite in the same period, rising from 37,000 to 92,000 for 2023 and on to 120,000 by 2025. For one year the two trajectories crossed decisively; a year later Iran was back where it had been.
China's climb from 37,000 to 120,000 more than tripled its reported figure.
Three series that never move
Kazakhstan has reported 85,000 thousand metric tons in all eight years shown, India 51,000 and Russia 12,000. Five of the six reported 2025 values are identical to the year before; the entire annual change in the listed total came from China alone.
Two countries missing from the latest year
Pakistan last reported 40,000 thousand metric tons in 2021 and Thailand 18,000 back in 2018. Türkiye reported no reserve value in 2023 before returning at 34,000. With two of eight countries absent from the latest year, the barite ranking is read from six values, not eight.

Methodology
Figures come from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026. The 2025 reserve figures are those reported in the 2026 edition. Units are thousand metric tons, exactly as reported. Blank entries indicate that the source reported no value; they are not zeroes. No world total is published for barite in the 2026 edition, so shares are computed against the sum of the listed countries. For barite, USGS notes that reserve data were included only when developed since the adoption of the 4.1-specific-gravity standard used for oil- and gas-drilling weighting agents. Reserves and production are different measures and should not be combined without equalizing units.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are barite reserves?
Barite reserves are estimated quantities of barite that can be economically extracted under applicable conditions, in thousand metric tons. Production measures the amount mined in a year.
Which countries hold the most barite reserves?
China (120,000 thousand metric tons), Iran (100,000) and Kazakhstan (85,000) reported the largest 2025 values.
Why do Pakistan and Thailand show no 2025 value?
The source published no 2025 value for either country; Pakistan last reported 40,000 thousand metric tons in 2021. An empty cell means not reported, not zero.
When did China overtake Iran in reported reserves?
China overtook Iran in 2023, when China reported 92,000 thousand metric tons and Iran reported 38,000.
Is there a world total?
No — USGS publishes no world total for this series.
