Barite Production by Country

Barite production by country measures how much barite each country mines, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production of crude barite, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for 2018-2023, built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 31 countries that record barite production in the period. 2025 figures are available individually for 10 countries, which produced a combined 8,350,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 350,000 tonnes, they match the World total of 8,700,000 tonnes in the source. The United States is listed in the source with a withheld figure (W), and most of the remaining countries retain their latest available Our World in Data figures, mostly from 2023.

China rose from 2,100,000 to 2,200,000 (up 100,000), Morocco from 930,000 to 1,000,000 (up 70,000), Mexico from 244,000 to 300,000 (up 56,000, about 23 percent), Kazakhstan by 50,000, Russia by 30,000, Laos by 10,000, and Pakistan by 6,000.

Türkiye recorded the only decline, falling from 261,000 to 260,000 tonnes (down 1,000). Iran held at 300,000. The World total rose from 8,000,000 to 8,700,000 tonnes (up 700,000, about 8.8 percent), and India alone accounted for about 57 percent of that increase. The source's value for countries not listed individually rose from 340,000 to 350,000 tonnes.

The 2024 figures in this release are revised from earlier values, most notably Mexico (revised down from 330,000 to 244,000 tonnes), Morocco (revised down from 1,000,000 to 930,000), and Türkiye (revised up from 220,000 to 261,000).

Methodology

The 2018-2023 figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national barite production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; countries not reported individually keep their latest Our World in Data figures, mostly from 2023. Values refer to mine production of crude barite, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source lists the United States with a withheld figure (W) in both years, and reports the remaining producers together as "Other countries" (340,000 tonnes in 2024 and 350,000 in 2025). The sum of individually reported countries (8,350,000 tonnes in 2025) plus the "Other countries" value equals the World total reported by the source. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country produces the most barite in 2025?

India produced the most barite in 2025 with 3,000,000 tonnes, followed by China (2,200,000) and Morocco (1,000,000).

How many countries are included in the dataset?

The table lists 31 countries that record barite mine production in the period. 2025 figures are available individually for 10 of them from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, while most of the rest report their latest available Our World in Data figures, mostly from 2023.

What does this indicator measure?

It measures crude barite mine production in tonnes, based on mined production, as in the underlying sources.

Which country produces the least barite among those with 2025 data?

Pakistan recorded the smallest 2025 output at 100,000 tonnes. Among countries reporting 2023 data, Nigeria recorded the smallest at 30 tonnes; Argentina, Guatemala, and Slovakia reported no output in 2023.

Why is the United States not shown?

The source lists a withheld figure (W) for the United States to avoid disclosing company proprietary data; the World total is reported but no U.S. amount is shown.

What is "Other countries"?

It is an aggregate of the remaining producers that the USGS reports as a group rather than individually; it was 350,000 tonnes in 2025 and 340,000 in 2024.

Why were the 2024 figures revised?

The USGS revises its prior-year estimates in each new release; this release revises Mexico down (330,000 to 244,000 tonnes), Morocco down (1,000,000 to 930,000), and Türkiye up (220,000 to 261,000).
