Bovine Meat Consumption by Country
In 2023, the United States held 12,723 thousand tonnes of listed bovine meat food supply, 1.13 times China at 11,218 thousand tonnes, in a 73,178-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. Yet the five-year growth belongs to the chasers: China added 2,316 thousand tonnes and India, up 131.1 percent, added 1,889. Argentina recorded the highest per-capita figure at 48.99 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
First and second sit just 1,505 thousand tonnes apart, the United States at 12,723 against China at 11,218. Per capita the order scrambles completely: Argentina leads at 48.99 kilograms from 2,231 thousand tonnes, with Zimbabwe at 45.48 kilograms, while neither volume leader cracks the per-capita top five. The two giants trade places depending on the window. In 2023 the United States leads China by 1,505 thousand tonnes, but since 2019 China added 2,316 thousand tonnes against America's 314. India, fourth by total, is the real mover of the period, more than doubling from 1,441 to 3,330 thousand tonnes. Argentina's 48.99 kilograms per person per year top the per-capita ranking from sixth place by total. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 1,526 thousand tonnes, or 2.1 percent. Brazil and China accounted for most of the largest increases, while the United States recorded a small decline. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 7.7 percent, with China contributing 44.3 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of bovine meat actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by the United States, whose listed food supply of bovine meat reached 12,723 thousand tonnes. China followed with 11,218 thousand tonnes and Brazil with 8,249 thousand tonnes. India and Pakistan completed the top five at 3,330 and 2,281 thousand tonnes, respectively. The United States holds 17.4 percent of the 73,178-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 44.0 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 51.7 percent and the top ten 64.4 percent. India, fourth by total, has more than doubled since 2019 while the two leaders barely moved in comparison. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 71,652 thousand tonnes to 73,178 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,526 thousand tonnes (2.1 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Brazil added 798 thousand tonnes (up 10.7 percent), China added 405 thousand tonnes (up 3.7 percent), Türkiye added 136 thousand tonnes (up 8.6 percent), Argentina added 124 thousand tonnes (up 5.9 percent), Guatemala added 124 thousand tonnes (up 59.3 percent) and Mexico added 110 thousand tonnes (up 5.7 percent), while the United States fell 142 thousand tonnes (down 1.1 percent) and Italy fell 95 thousand tonnes (down 9.9 percent). For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 67,946 thousand tonnes to 73,178 thousand tonnes, a gain of 5,232 thousand tonnes (7.7 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 92 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 2,316 thousand tonnes (up 26.0 percent), India added 1,889 thousand tonnes (up 131.1 percent), Türkiye added 640 thousand tonnes (up 59.3 percent), Brazil added 399 thousand tonnes (up 5.1 percent) and Vietnam added 249 thousand tonnes (up 72.0 percent), while Iran fell 346 thousand tonnes (down 54.1 percent) and Myanmar fell 339 thousand tonnes (down 70.2 percent). The United States added just 314 thousand tonnes (up 2.5 percent) despite leading the table. China and India together account for 80.4 percent of the five-year net increase, with the table leader contributing the smallest share among the top gainers. Per capita, Argentina's 48.99 kilograms from 2,231 thousand tonnes lead Zimbabwe at 45.48 kilograms, while the United States, first by total, records 37.04 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Bovine Meat recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of bovine meat people actually ate. Cuts and preparations recorded under separate items in the detailed accounts sit outside this aggregate figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, the United States had the largest listed bovine meat food supply among 176 reporters, at 12,723 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 11,218 thousand tonnes and Brazil at 8,249 thousand tonnes. Argentina had the highest per-capita figure at 48.99 kilograms per person per year. FAO Food Balances figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount of bovine meat actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Bovine Meat from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 73,178 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Bovine Meat Food Supply at a Glance

Bovine Meat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How close is the United States-China race in bovine meat?
The United States led in 2023 with 12,723 thousand tonnes against China's 11,218 thousand tonnes, a gap of 1,505 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, though, China added 2,316 thousand tonnes against 314 for the United States.
Why did India's bovine meat food supply more than double since 2019?
The FAO Food Balances data show India at 1,441 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 3,330 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the increase. The 1,889-thousand-tonne gain was up 131.1 percent.
Is the food supply of bovine meat the same as bovine meat eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
