Bovine Meat, Salted, Dried or Smoked Consumption by Country
Pakistan reported the largest food supply of salted, dried or smoked bovine meat in 2023, at 12,134 tonnes, about 13.0 percent of the listed total of 93,578 tonnes. The Netherlands ranked second at 9,293 tonnes, followed by Mongolia at 8,107 tonnes. Mongolia also ranked first per person, at 6.47 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Which country has the largest food supply of salted, dried or smoked bovine meat? Pakistan had the largest listed food supply in 2023, at 12,134 tonnes, followed by the Netherlands at 9,293 tonnes and Mongolia at 8,107 tonnes. Mongolia ranked first in food supply per person, at 6.47 grams per person per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Hong Kong placed fourth at 6,515 tonnes, with Russia fifth at 5,414 and Hungary sixth at 5,320. South Korea, Türkiye, Brazil and France closed the top ten between 3,394 and 4,382 tonnes. The top three held 31.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 44.3 percent. Spain lost 11,018 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 80.6 percent to 2,647 tonnes. Hong Kong lost 2,771 tonnes, down 29.8 percent. Brazil shed 598 tonnes, down 13.4 percent. France gave up 491 tonnes, down 12.6 percent. Italy fell 418 tonnes, down 59.7 percent. Belgium added 549 tonnes, up 22.7 percent. The Netherlands added 500 tonnes, up 5.7 percent. Mongolia added 448 tonnes, up 5.8 percent. The 141 countries with reported values in both years fell from 105,018 tonnes to 90,715 tonnes, down 14,303 tonnes, or 13.6 percent. Sierra Leone reported 32.7 tonnes in 2022 with no 2023 value, while Comoros and Vietnam first reported values in 2023, totalling 2,863 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 137 countries with reported values in both years grew from 77,470 tonnes to 90,705 tonnes, up 13,235 tonnes, or 17.1 percent. The Netherlands added 6,897 tonnes, up 287.9 percent from 2,396, accounting for 52.1 percent of the net gain. Hong Kong added 6,136 tonnes from 379. India went from 5,093 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. Mongolia added 4,366 tonnes, up 116.7 percent. Belgium added 2,284 tonnes, up 331.7 percent. Brazil added 1,782 tonnes, up 85.7 percent. Spain lost 2,652 tonnes, down 50.0 percent. Denmark shed 1,729 tonnes, down 93.6 percent. Eight countries with 8 tonnes in 2019 were absent from the comparison, while six additional countries contributed 2,873 tonnes to the 2023 total. Mongolia ranked first in 2023 at 6.47 grams per person per day, followed by Hong Kong at 2.40 grams. Hungary placed third at 1.50 grams, with the Netherlands at 1.41 and Antigua and Barbuda at 1.12. The Bahamas reported 1.10 grams, with Suriname at 1.02, Belarus at 0.91, Estonia at 0.84 and Belgium at 0.70. Pakistan, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population. Salted, dried or smoked bovine meat for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 151 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 143 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. India fell from 5,093 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023, and Uruguay dropped from 187.85 tonnes in 2022 to 3.04 tonnes in 2023, while the Philippines went from 12.01 tonnes in 2019 to zero. Such reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO. Whether they reflect real changes in availability or changes in reporting cannot be determined from this table alone, so sharp falls to zero should be checked against the original FAOSTAT records before being interpreted. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report salted bovine meat food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.
