Bread Consumption by Country
Argentina accounted for 57.1 percent of the listed global bread food supply in 2023, far ahead of Peru and Ukraine. It also ranked first in food supply per person, at 194.34 grams per day. Total supply across 176 countries with comparable data rose by 1.2 percent from 2022 to 2023 and by 6.7 percent from 2019 to 2023. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
Bread Supply by Country: Key Findings. Argentina ranked first in bread food supply in 2023, with 3,230,293 tonnes, representing 57.1 percent of the listed total. Peru followed with 763,775 tonnes, and Ukraine ranked third with 284,376 tonnes. Argentina also had the highest reported food supply per person, at 194.34 grams per day, followed by Moldova at 126.33 grams. Across 176 countries with comparable data, the total increased by 67,707 tonnes between 2022 and 2023. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Argentina Accounts for More Than Half of Listed Supply
Argentina led at 3,230,293 tonnes, 4.23 times Peru. Ukraine sat third at 284,376 tonnes, ahead of Kenya at 240,944 and Egypt at 137,473. The top three held 75.6 percent of the 5,658,780-tonne total, and the top five 82.3 percent. Moldova, France, Tajikistan, the United States and Mongolia closed the top ten between 40,504 and 118,370 tonnes. One hundred seventy-six countries carried a 2023 value.
Across the 176 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 1.2 percent, from 5,591,073 tonnes, a gain of 67,707. Argentina added 128,539 tonnes, up 4.1 percent, nearly twice the net rise. Canada shed 42,502 tonnes, down 55.8 percent. Kenya shed 23,805 tonnes and Belarus 22,684, down 91.6 percent from 24,761. Peru shed 17,778 tonnes. Thailand added 10,819 tonnes from 824. The Netherlands added 10,486 tonnes, up 78.1 percent. Among the 176 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 6.7 percent, from 5,301,652 tonnes, a gain of 357,128. Argentina added 230,449 tonnes, up 7.7 percent from 2,999,844. Peru added 172,162 tonnes, up 29.1 percent. Together these gains exceed the net increase because declines elsewhere offset part of them. Kenya shed 86,823 tonnes, down 26.5 percent, and Ukraine 77,926. Belarus shed 19,868 tonnes, down 90.5 percent. Panama added 28,997 tonnes from 652. Egypt added 22,528 tonnes. The United Arab Emirates added 18,684 tonnes, up 473.1 percent. Cuba reported 77.04 tonnes in 2019 with no later values. Argentina's 194.34 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Moldova at 126.33 and Peru at 61.83. Mongolia followed at 32.33 grams and Ukraine at 20.65. Panama sat at 18.22 grams after adding 28,997 tonnes over five years. Kenya, fourth by volume, sat at 11.93 grams per person. All figures describe food supply per person, not measured individual intake. This page follows the SUA item labelled Bread and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual total includes only countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten. Coverage varies widely by country: the Bread item records only reported supply, so near-zero values reflect limited reporting rather than low consumption. Argentina, for example, reported 9,186 tonnes in 2018 and 2,999,844 tonnes in 2019, a reporting break rather than a consumption explosion. The older Food Balance Sheets carry no separate bread item; bread is embodied there in the wheat-and-products aggregate. Finland rose from 27.33 tonnes in 2021 to 14,378 tonnes in 2022 and 15,186 tonnes in 2023, while Belarus fell from 24,761 tonnes in 2022 to 2,077 tonnes in 2023 and Canada from 76,140 to 33,638 tonnes. Such sharp breaks in individual series should be checked against FAOSTAT records before being interpreted as real changes. Türkiye's recorded 2023 value was 798.66 tonnes, or 0.03 grams per person per day. For bread, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 177 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; all but one carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Source: FAO FAOSTAT, compiled by StatsGeo.Argentina Rises as Canada's Supply Falls
