Breakfast Cereals Consumption by Country
China held 2,129,094 tonnes of listed breakfast cereals food supply in 2023, 42.8 percent of a 4,973,733-tonne total. China and India together accounted for 92.9 percent of the five-year net gain of 2,034,114 tonnes, with China more than doubling and India rising more than five-fold from 167,984 tonnes. The single year rose 18.9 percent on gains in China, India, Türkiye and the Netherlands against Germany's fall of 30,221 tonnes. Iceland leads per person at 21.33 grams per person per day.
China leads at 2,129,094 tonnes, 2.28 times India at 934,425, with the United States third at 191,303 and Iraq fourth at 92,631. Per capita Iceland leads at 21.33 grams per person per day, followed by Ireland at 21.22 and Trinidad and Tobago at 18.52 grams. China, first by total, records 4.10 grams per person per day. The FAO dataset lists 176 reporters with breakfast cereals values, although only 175 have a reported 2023 quantity. China and India account for most of the five-year increase, while the highest per-capita values come from countries with much smaller total supplies., with neither China nor India in the top ten per person. China more than doubled from 1,007,194 to 2,129,094 tonnes over five years, and India rose more than five-fold from 167,984 to 934,425. Türkiye, South Korea and Belgium each added tens of thousands of tonnes from small bases, while Syria and Canada recorded the largest five-year declines. The 2023 table is led by China at 2,129,094 tonnes, with India second at 934,425 and the United States third at 191,303. Iraq and Vietnam complete the top five at 92,631 and 91,615 tonnes, respectively. China holds 42.8 percent of the 4,973,733-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 65.4 percent of the listed total, the top five 69.1 percent and the top ten 76.4 percent. Per capita, Iceland's 21.33 grams per person per day lead Ireland at 21.22 grams, while India, second by total, records 1.78 grams. Among the 175 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 4,184,025 tonnes to 4,973,733 tonnes, a gain of 789,708 tonnes (18.9 percent). The two years share the same 175 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 451,689 tonnes (up 26.9 percent), India added 276,771 tonnes (up 42.1 percent), Türkiye added 52,914 tonnes from 3,131 tonnes, the Netherlands added 31,625 tonnes (up 73.8 percent), the United Kingdom added 28,001 tonnes (up 64.0 percent), South Korea added 23,949 tonnes from 1,491 tonnes and Belgium added 19,738 tonnes (up 101.8 percent), while Germany fell 30,221 tonnes (down 54.5 percent). China and India together added 728,460 tonnes against a net increase of 789,708, so the remaining reporters net to a small remainder. Germany's fall from 55,450 to 25,229 tonnes is the largest absolute annual decline. For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 2,939,619 tonnes to 4,973,733 tonnes, a gain of 2,034,114 tonnes (69.2 percent). The full 2019 universe includes 176 reporters with reported values (2,940,353 tonnes), while the 2023 universe includes 175; Cuba, with 734 tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, so the comparison above excludes it. China added 1,121,900 tonnes (up 111.4 percent), India added 766,441 tonnes (up 456.3 percent), the United States added 67,758 tonnes (up 54.8 percent), Türkiye added 56,045 tonnes from a reported zero, Italy added 47,448 tonnes (up 199.3 percent) and Belgium added 35,156 tonnes (up 886.2 percent), while Syria fell 59,006 tonnes (down 64.6 percent) and Canada fell 57,417 tonnes (down 43.6 percent). China contributes 55.2 percent of the five-year net increase and India 37.7 percent, so the two together account for 92.9 percent. Syria's fall from 91,300 to 32,294 tonnes and Canada's from 131,760 to 74,343 are the largest absolute five-year declines among the reporters listed here. The numbers in this article come from the Breakfast cereals item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, recorded as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A breakfast cereals total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The per-capita figure puts the reported quantity into population terms, showing how much food supply was available per person each day. Iceland records the highest value at 21.33 grams. In 2023, FAO Supply Utilization Accounts recorded 4,973,733 tonnes of listed breakfast cereals food supply across 175 reporters with reported values. China had the largest total at 2,129,094 tonnes, followed by India at 934,425 and the United States at 191,303 tonnes. Iceland had the highest per-capita supply at 21.33 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of breakfast cereals actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Breakfast cereals from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 4,973,733 tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Breakfast Cereals Food Supply at a Glance

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did China and India drive almost all of the five-year growth?
China added 1,121,900 tonnes and India 766,441 between 2019 and 2023, together 1,888,341 tonnes against a net listed gain of 2,034,114 tonnes. The next-largest gain, the United States' 67,758 tonnes, was far smaller. The figures show the scale of these increases, but they do not identify what caused them.
Why did Germany's breakfast cereals supply fall 54.5 percent in one year?
Germany's listed supply fell from 55,450 tonnes in 2022 to 25,229 tonnes in 2023. The figures record the size of the fall, but they do not identify what caused it.
Is the food supply of breakfast cereals the same as cereals eaten?
No. The FAO food supply quantity measure records food available for human consumption. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food availability and actual dietary intake are not the same.
