Broken Rice Consumption by Country
India holds 3,521,118 tonnes of listed broken rice supply in 2023 — 43.2 percent of an 8,151,852-tonne total. India traces a sharp V across the five-year window: 3,910,968 tonnes in 2019, down to 1,480,430 in 2022, back to 3,521,118 in 2023. Its single-year gain of 2,040,688 tonnes equals 100.4 percent of the net annual increase, while its five-year fall of 389,850 tonnes nearly mirrors Bangladesh's 396,160-tonne climb. Gambia tops per person at 221.82 grams a day.
India sits top at 3,521,118 tonnes, 2.93 times Senegal at 1,200,000, with Burkina Faso third at 404,227 and Bangladesh fourth at 400,000. Per person Gambia doubles most of the field at 221.82 grams a day, ahead of Senegal at 181.86 and Comoros at 177.14. India, first by total, records 6.71 grams per person. The broken rice item covers 107 reporters in the dataset, with 102 reporting a 2023 value. India holds more than two fifths of the listed total, while several West African reporters rank high by total or per person: Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau all sit in the top ranks by one measure or the other. Cuba's exit at 382,970 tonnes removed the largest departing supply in the whole comparison. India's V shapes both windows in opposite ways. Its single-year surge beats the net annual gain, while its five-year fall nearly cancels Bangladesh's climb. Bangladesh itself held exactly flat at 400,000 tonnes between 2022 and 2023 after rising more than a hundred-fold from 3,840 tonnes in 2019. The 2023 table opens with India at 3,521,118 tonnes, Senegal second at 1,200,000 and Burkina Faso third at 404,227. Bangladesh and Afghanistan follow at 400,000 and 359,097 tonnes. India holds 43.2 percent of the 8,151,852-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 62.9 percent of the listed total, the top five 72.2 percent and the top ten 84.6 percent. Per capita, Gambia's 221.82 grams per person per day lead Senegal at 181.86 grams, while India, first by total, records 6.71 grams. Across the 102 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 6,118,205 tonnes to 8,151,852 tonnes, up 2,033,647 tonnes or 33.2 percent. The two years share the same 102 reporters, with none entering or leaving. India added 2,040,688 tonnes (up 137.8 percent), the Philippines 62,529 (up 60.8 percent), Afghanistan 60,614 (up 20.3 percent), Kenya 59,501 from 4,166 tonnes and Senegal 50,000 (up 4.3 percent), while Ethiopia fell 90,660 tonnes (down 55.0 percent), Ghana 80,351 (down 23.5 percent) and Ivory Coast 43,182 (down 44.9 percent). India's gain of 2,040,688 tonnes against a net increase of 2,033,647 equals 100.4 percent of the net change. Bangladesh held exactly flat at 400,000 tonnes, and Kenya's rise from 4,166 to 63,667 tonnes is large only against its small base. For the 99 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 7,361,616 tonnes to 8,121,838 tonnes, up 760,222 tonnes or 10.3 percent. The 2019 universe holds 103 reporters with values against 102 in 2023; four reporters with a combined 382,974 tonnes left, led by Cuba at 382,970 tonnes, while three with a combined 30,014 tonnes entered, led by Timor-Leste at 30,000 tonnes. Bangladesh added 396,160 tonnes, Afghanistan 290,897 (up 426.5 percent), Senegal 250,000 (up 26.3 percent), Burkina Faso 214,227 (up 112.8 percent) and the Philippines 108,895 (up 192.6 percent), while India fell 389,850 tonnes (down 10.0 percent), Ghana 238,966 (down 47.8 percent) and Ethiopia 141,450 (down 65.6 percent). Bangladesh contributes 52.1 percent of the five-year net increase while India's fall equals 51.3 percent of it in absolute terms, so the two nearly mirror each other. Bangladesh's rise from 3,840 to 400,000 tonnes started from almost nothing, and Cuba's exit removed nearly the entire departing total. Counted here is the Rice, broken item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts — fragmented kernels separated during milling — as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A total of this kind is not an estimate of what people actually ate. Whole-grain rice items sit outside this figure. The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into grams available per person during the day. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, and here the two views split: India leads by total while Gambia leads per person. India recorded the largest 2023 listed broken rice supply at 3,521,118 tonnes — 43.2 percent of an 8,151,852-tonne listed total across 102 reporters. Senegal followed at 1,200,000 and Burkina Faso at 404,227 tonnes. Gambia had the highest per-capita figure at 221.82 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Year-to-year comparisons use reporters present in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the percentage base. Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes); per-capita figures are element 665 in grams per capita per day — both for rice broken, 2019 through 2023. The elements count supply made available for human consumption over the reference period. A displayed zero means zero and a blank cell means no value was reported, and no percentage is shown where the base-year value is zero. This item covers 107 reporters in total, reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are left out entirely, so China here means the China reporter. The 8,151,852-tonne listed total adds the 102 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes exactly as FAO reports them, without extra rounding. Broken Rice Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did India's supply swing both ways?
India reported 3,910,968 tonnes in 2019, 1,480,430 in 2022 and 3,521,118 tonnes in 2023. The figures record a fall of 389,850 tonnes over five years against a gain of 2,040,688 tonnes in the latest year, without identifying what caused either move.
How did Bangladesh rise more than a hundred-fold?
Bangladesh reported 400,000 tonnes in both 2022 and 2023, after climbing from just 3,840 tonnes in 2019. The figures record the size of the climb without identifying what caused it.
Is broken rice supply the same as rice eaten?
No. The FAO measure counts food available for human consumption; it does not directly record how much people ate.
