Buckwheat Exports by Country
Russia reported 59,157 tonnes of buckwheat exports in 2020 and 71,573 tonnes in 2021, more than a third of the 2020 listed total, and reported no further quantity afterward, so the 29.9 percent growth among continuing reporters is obscured by the decline in the full listed total. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Buckwheat, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 81 countries; 59 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 125,431 tonnes. The 2024 country list for buckwheat exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
The United States was the largest buckwheat exporter in the 2024 listed data with 34,470 tonnes, followed by Latvia with 16,452 tonnes and Lithuania with 15,672 tonnes. China ranked fourth with 10,721 tonnes, ahead of Kazakhstan (10,029 tonnes), Poland (9,368 tonnes), Estonia (7,204 tonnes) and Canada (3,653 tonnes). The United States also led on export value at 22,015,000 US dollars, followed by Lithuania (8,100,000) and Latvia (7,909,000). Strip out the reporters that left and the market grew nearly a third: the 54-country common universe rose 28,809 tonnes (29.9 percent) between 2020 and 2024, led by the United States (+20,138 tonnes, up 140.5 percent), Latvia (+6,440 tonnes, up 64.3 percent) and Estonia (+5,768 tonnes, from 1,436 to 7,204 tonnes). Russia's 59,157 tonnes account for most of the gap between the 2020 listed total and the 2020 common-reporter total. The United States holds 27.5 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 2.10 times Latvia; the top three together hold 53.1 percent, the top five 69.6 percent and the top ten 90.3 percent. Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia were the leading northern European exporters, Kazakhstan and China stand in Asia, and the United States and Canada carry North America. Across the 52 countries reporting in both years, total exports rose from 97,373 tonnes in 2023 to 125,422 tonnes in 2024, a gain of 28,049 tonnes (28.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 97,466 tonnes (60 reporters) and 125,431 tonnes (59 reporters). The United States added 10,421 tonnes (up 43.3 percent), Kazakhstan 5,251 tonnes (up 109.9 percent) and Estonia 4,188 tonnes (up 138.9 percent). Brazil fell 1,325 tonnes (down 32.2 percent) and India 420 tonnes (down 42.1 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (54 countries with data in both years) rose from 96,334 tonnes to 125,143 tonnes, a change of 28,809 tonnes (29.9 percent). The totals listed for each year were 164,331 tonnes (68 reporters) and 125,431 tonnes (59 reporters); 14 countries reporting in 2020 (67,997 tonnes combined, led by Russia with 59,157 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Poland fell 3,557 tonnes (down 27.5 percent) and Canada 2,522 tonnes (down 40.8 percent). In the buckwheat exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for buckwheat exports, 2020-2024. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars, unadjusted for inflation. The 2024 buckwheat exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. The buckwheat exports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Buckwheat Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the headline totals move less than the 29.9 percent growth?
The 2020 listed total of 164,331 tonnes included Russia's 59,157 tonnes, which has no 2024 counterpart. Removing all 14 reporters missing in 2024 leaves the 54-country common universe, which grew 29.9 percent on continuing reporters alone.
How should Estonia's 401.7 percent rise be read?
Estonia grew from 1,436 tonnes in 2020 to 7,204 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 5,768 tonnes. For buckwheat, the percentage is read alongside the absolute gain because the starting quantity is small.
Did the United States lead in both years?
No. The 2024 ranking puts the United States first with 34,470 tonnes; in 2020 it reported 14,332 tonnes while Russia led with 59,157. Leadership here describes each year's listed ranking only.
What does this buckwheat exports series not show?
This dataset does not cover production, stocks, domestic use, or processing; it records reporter-level export quantities and values, so its comparisons stay on the export side.
