Buckwheat Imports by Country

China's buckwheat imports rose from 3,388 tonnes in 2020 to 221,764 tonnes in 2024, accounting for three-fifths of the current import table. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Buckwheat, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 141 countries; 89 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 371,820 tonnes. The 2024 country list for buckwheat imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

China was the largest buckwheat importer in the 2024 listed data with 221,764 tonnes, followed by Japan with 34,381 tonnes and Italy with 16,793 tonnes. Poland ranked fourth with 13,775 tonnes, ahead of Azerbaijan (13,625 tonnes), Lithuania (7,511 tonnes), Georgia (7,270 tonnes) and the United States (6,558 tonnes). China also led on import value at 73,611,000 US dollars, followed by Japan (35,522,000) and Italy (9,836,000).

China's 2020-2024 gain of 218,376 tonnes exceeds the common-universe net gain of 159,998 tonnes by more than a third. China's increase was partly offset by large declines in Tanzania, Ukraine and Malaysia. Because the 2020 base was only 3,388 tonnes, the absolute increase is more informative than the percentage change.

China holds 59.6 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 6.45 times Japan; the top three together hold 73.4 percent, the top five 80.8 percent and the top ten 89.7 percent. Japan and Azerbaijan buy in Asia beside the leader, Italy, Poland, Lithuania and Georgia cover Europe, and the United States stands as the only Western Hemisphere buyer above 5,000 tonnes.

Buckwheat Import Growth Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (81 countries with data in both years) rose from 279,896 tonnes to 371,793 tonnes, a change of 91,897 tonnes (32.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 281,378 tonnes (118 reporters) and 371,820 tonnes (89 reporters). China added 97,662 tonnes (up 78.7 percent) and Estonia 3,220 tonnes (from 1,135 to 4,355 tonnes) from a small base. Kazakhstan fell 2,966 tonnes (down 84.0 percent) and Lithuania 2,492 tonnes (down 24.9 percent).

Buckwheat Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Across the 80 countries reporting in both years, total imports rose from 211,801 tonnes in 2020 to 371,799 tonnes in 2024, a gain of 159,998 tonnes (75.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 274,403 tonnes (117 reporters) and 371,820 tonnes (89 reporters). Italy added 6,033 tonnes (up 56.1 percent) and Lithuania 3,630 tonnes (up 93.5 percent). Tanzania fell from 40,000 tonnes to 0.05 tonnes (down 100.0 percent), a reported near-zero flow rather than a reporting gap, while Ukraine fell from 32,226 tonnes to 40.07 tonnes (down 99.9 percent).

Near-zero flows like Tanzania’s 0.05 tonnes are reported values in this table, not gaps: displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes precisely so such trickles stay visible. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for buckwheat imports, 2020-2024, for quantity and for value in full current US dollars. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars, unadjusted for inflation. The 2024 buckwheat imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the buckwheat imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The buckwheat imports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an import record and its mirror export may disagree.
