Türkiye Records the Largest Annual Decline

Türkiye's reported sheep milk butter and ghee supply fell by 3,210 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, a decrease of 12.5 percent. Iran declined by 580 tonnes, while Afghanistan fell by 58 tonnes. In contrast, Syria added 414 tonnes, Yemen increased by 34 tonnes, and the United Arab Emirates rose by 19.21 tonnes. Across the 11 countries with reported values in both years, total supply decreased from 60,405 tonnes, a fall of 3,403 tonnes, or 5.6 percent. The reporting group was unchanged between the two years.

Türkiye Drives the Five-Year Decline

Across the 11 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, combined supply fell from 66,368 tonnes, a decrease of 9,366 tonnes, or 14.1 percent. Türkiye recorded the largest decline, with supply dropping by 14,109 tonnes, or 38.6 percent. Saudi Arabia and Morocco also reported small decreases. In contrast, Syria increased by 1,975 tonnes, Iran by 1,947 tonnes, and Afghanistan by 503 tonnes. Comoros had a reported value of 0.92 tonnes in 2019 but no reported values for the following years; the dataset does not establish why those later values are missing.

Syria Leads Per-Capita Supply

Syria had the highest per-capita sheep milk butter and ghee supply in 2023, at 1.02 grams per person per day. Türkiye ranked second at 0.70 grams, followed by Iran at 0.41 grams. Afghanistan recorded 0.28 grams, while the United Arab Emirates reported 0.19 grams and Yemen 0.15 grams. Türkiye led total supply, while Syria ranked first per person.

What the Sheep Milk Butter and Ghee Data Measures

The dataset reports sheep milk butter and ghee food supply in tonnes and grams per person per day for 2019-2023. Total tonnage measures the reported quantity available for human consumption, while the per-capita indicator adjusts the supply figure for population size. Neither measure confirms how much people actually ate. In 2023, Türkiye ranked first by total supply, while Syria had the highest per-capita figure. The total includes the 11 countries with reported values for that year.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts provide food-supply figures for sheep milk butter and ghee in tonnes (element 5141) and grams per person per day (element 665) for 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; percentage changes are not calculated when the base value is zero. After aggregate rows are excluded, the dataset covers 12 countries, 11 of which have reported values for 2023. Comparisons use countries with reported values at both endpoints. The 2023 total of 57,002 tonnes is the sum of the 11 countries with reported values for that year. Reported zeroes are retained, blanks are treated as missing, and values below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimal places.
