India stayed the largest butter and ghee producer while adding 118,076 tonnes and Pakistan added 36,623 tonnes. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Butter and Ghee, 2019-2023, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 126 countries, all of which reported a 2023 quantity, and the 2023 annual listed total is 13,125,390 tonnes. The 2023 country list for butter and ghee production runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

India produced 4.32 times as much as Pakistan: 5,476,098 tonnes against 1,267,628, while the United States ranks third with 969,319 tonnes, 298,309 tonnes behind Pakistan. The top two hold 51.4 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 969,319 and 468,880 tonnes respectively.

Butter and Ghee Production by Country in 2023

India was the largest butter and ghee producer in the 2023 listed data with 5,476,098 tonnes, followed by Pakistan with 1,267,628 tonnes and the United States with 969,319 tonnes. Germany ranked fourth with 468,880 tonnes.

India holds 41.7 percent of the listed 2023 total. The top three together hold 58.8 percent of the 13,125,390-tonne listed total.

From 2022 to 2023 the common reporter universe (126 countries with data in both years) moved from 12,899,388 tonnes to 13,125,390 tonnes, a change of 226,002 tonnes (1.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 12,899,388 tonnes (126 reporters) and 13,125,390 tonnes (126 reporters); no country exited and no new reporter joined. India added 118,076 tonnes (up 2.2 percent) and Pakistan 36,623 tonnes (up 3.0 percent), while the United States added 24,086 tonnes (up 2.5 percent).

India Adds 680,869 Tonnes as Butter and Ghee Production Grows 7.5 Percent Since 2019

Between 2019 and 2023, the common reporter universe (124 countries with data in both years) rose from 12,205,569 tonnes to 13,122,560 tonnes, a change of 916,991 tonnes (7.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 12,205,569 tonnes (124 reporters) and 13,125,390 tonnes (126 reporters); no reporter present in 2019 is absent in 2023, while 2 new reporters joined (Jordan, 2,349 tonnes, and Vietnam, 480.2 tonnes). India added 680,869 tonnes (up 14.2 percent), accounting for 74.2 percent of the increase, while Pakistan added 80,886 tonnes (up 6.8 percent) and Türkiye fell 118,963 tonnes (down 44.1 percent).

Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products production quantity (Element 5510) for item Butter and Ghee, 2019-2023. For butter and ghee production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2023 butter and ghee production ranking and shares use 2023 listed quantities. In the butter and ghee production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For butter and ghee production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.
