Canary Seed Exports by Country
Germany reported 170.51 tonnes of canary seed exports in 2020 and 4,776 tonnes in 2024, growing about twenty-eight-fold and reaching fourth place. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Canary seed, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 53 countries; 37 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 165,082 tonnes. The 2024 country list for canary seed exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
Canada was the largest canary seed exporter in the 2024 listed data with 118,056 tonnes, followed by Argentina with 21,299 tonnes and Hungary with 5,414 tonnes. Germany ranked fourth with 4,776 tonnes, ahead of the United States (3,654 tonnes), the Netherlands (1,995 tonnes), Ukraine (1,823 tonnes) and Belgium (1,729 tonnes). Canada also led on export value at 95,679,000 US dollars, followed by Argentina (8,581,000) and Hungary (4,181,000). Germany's twenty-eight-fold climb is the table's quiet reshaping: from 170.51 tonnes to 4,776 tonnes, an increase of about 4,605 tonnes that lifted it past the United States into fourth place. Canada, meanwhile, fell 31,655 tonnes (down 21.1 percent) between 2020 and 2024 yet kept 71.5 percent of the total at a 5.54 ratio, dominance through scale rather than growth. The top three hold 87.7 percent of the listed 2024 total, the top five 92.8 percent and the top ten 98.0 percent. Canada and the United States were the leading North American exporters, Argentina stands alone in South America above 1,000 tonnes, and Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Belgium keep the trade present across Europe. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (33 countries with data in both years) fell from 169,359 tonnes to 164,278 tonnes, a change of -5,081 tonnes (-3.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 170,997 tonnes (41 reporters) and 165,082 tonnes (37 reporters). Hungary added 1,741 tonnes (up 47.4 percent) and Germany 1,600 tonnes (up 50.4 percent), while Argentina added 1,431 tonnes (up 7.2 percent). Canada fell 8,264 tonnes (down 6.5 percent) and Türkiye 1,421 tonnes (from 3,086 to 1,665 tonnes, down 46.0 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (29 countries with data in both years) fell from 187,064 tonnes to 164,279 tonnes, a change of -22,785 tonnes (-12.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 188,258 tonnes (36 reporters) and 165,082 tonnes (37 reporters). Argentina added 4,540 tonnes (up 27.1 percent) and Hungary 3,645 tonnes (up 206.0 percent). The Netherlands fell 2,781 tonnes (down 58.2 percent) and Belgium 1,148 tonnes (down 39.9 percent), while Australia fell from 1,597 tonnes to 2 tonnes (down 99.9 percent), a reported near-zero flow rather than a reporting gap. Small bases run through the footnotes of this table: Germany's 170.51 tonnes in 2020 and Australia's 2 tonnes in 2024 are reported values kept at full display precision, never rounded away. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Canary seed, export quantity and export value, 2020-2024; values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 canary seed exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the canary seed exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For canary seed exports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may disagree.Canary Seed Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Germany reach fourth place from 170.51 tonnes?
Germany reported 170.51 tonnes for 2020 and 4,776 tonnes for 2024, an increase of about 4,605 tonnes, roughly twenty-eight-fold. No percentage is stated for a move from that base; the absolute climb and both endpoints carry the story.
Did Australia stop reporting canary seed exports?
No. Australia reported 1,597 tonnes for 2020 and 2 tonnes for 2024 (down 99.9 percent). Both are reported values, so the retreat counts inside the change arithmetic; a blank cell would instead mean nothing was reported.
Why does Canada still lead while shrinking?
Canada fell from 149,711 tonnes in 2020 to 118,056 tonnes in 2024 (down 21.1 percent) and still holds 71.5 percent at a 5.54 ratio over Argentina. The 31,655-tonne retreat exceeded the 22,785-tonne net decline of the common universe, with Argentina, Hungary and Germany absorbing much of it.
What does this canary seed exports series not show?
This dataset does not cover production, stocks, domestic use, or processing; it records reporter-level export quantities and values, so its comparisons stay on the export side.
