Canary Seed Imports by Country
Mexico's 18,143-tonne expansion exceeds the net growth of the common reporter universe by more than a quarter, because four mid-size buyers retreated at once. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Canary seed, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 127 countries; 77 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 156,176 tonnes. The 2024 country list for canary seed imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
Mexico was the largest canary seed importer in the 2024 listed data with 40,262 tonnes, followed by Brazil with 20,439 tonnes and Belgium with 18,781 tonnes. The United States ranked fourth with 7,080 tonnes, ahead of Saudi Arabia (6,595 tonnes), Spain (6,591 tonnes), Colombia (6,561 tonnes) and Italy (5,514 tonnes). Mexico also led on import value at 33,696,000 US dollars, followed by Belgium (16,487,000) and Brazil (11,085,000). Mexico added 18,143 tonnes (up 82.0 percent) inside a net common-universe gain of 14,329 tonnes (about 127 percent of it), with Türkiye (-3,984 tonnes), Spain (-2,225 tonnes), Belgium (-1,861 tonnes) and Indonesia (-1,578 tonnes) offsetting the surplus. The leader's growth and the market's growth are different stories here, and only the second one fits in a headline total. Mexico holds 25.8 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.97 times Brazil; the top three together hold 50.9 percent, the top five 59.6 percent and the top ten 78.1 percent. Brazil and Colombia buy in South America, Belgium, Spain and Italy in Europe, Saudi Arabia in the Middle East, and the United States and Mexico in North America. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (71 countries with data in both years) rose from 139,770 tonnes to 154,099 tonnes, a change of 14,329 tonnes (10.3 percent). The totals listed for each year were 153,202 tonnes (95 reporters) and 156,176 tonnes (77 reporters); 24 countries reporting in 2023 (13,432 tonnes combined, led by Kuwait with 5,461 and Morocco with 2,748 tonnes) did not report in 2024. The Dominican Republic added 1,654 tonnes (from 1,331 to 2,985 tonnes, up 124.3 percent) and Colombia 992 tonnes (up 17.8 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (67 countries with data in both years) fell from 169,522 tonnes to 156,010 tonnes, a change of -13,512 tonnes (-8.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 188,636 tonnes (103 reporters) and 156,176 tonnes (77 reporters); 36 countries reporting in 2020 (19,114 tonnes combined, led by Morocco with 4,027 and Kuwait with 3,755 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Saudi Arabia added 4,149 tonnes (up 169.6 percent) and China 2,141 tonnes (up 71.4 percent). Belgium fell 12,361 tonnes (down 39.7 percent) and Brazil 7,562 tonnes (down 27.0 percent). Contribution arithmetic gets its own sentence in this table because the leader moves faster than the total: Mexico's gain exceeded the net, so the text reports 127 percent with the offsetting declines named beside it. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Canary seed, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. For canary seed imports, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes; values remain full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 canary seed imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the canary seed imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For canary seed imports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an import record and its mirror export may disagree.Canary Seed Imports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Mexico's gain exceed the market's gain?
Mexico added 18,143 tonnes (up 82.0 percent) while the 71-country common universe gained 14,329 tonnes net, because Türkiye, Spain, Belgium and Indonesia retreated a combined 9,648 tonnes. A contribution above 100 percent means the leader outran the net, offsetting opposite moves; it is arithmetic, not error.
Why did Kuwait leave the ranking?
Kuwait reported 5,461 tonnes for 2023 and nothing for 2024, the largest of 24 reporters missing that year. A blank cell means not reported rather than zero, so Kuwait leaves the change universe while shaping each-year totals.
How should the Dominican Republic's 124.3 percent rise be read?
The Dominican Republic grew from 1,331 tonnes in 2023 to 2,985 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 1,654 tonnes. For canary seed, the percentage is read alongside the absolute gain because the starting quantity is small.
What is missing from this canary seed imports picture?
Whether canary seed output rose or fell, who consumed it, or what it cost to produce; none of that is in this dataset. It records import quantities and values by reporter, so only import-side comparisons hold.
