Casein Consumption by Country
Poland had the highest reported casein food supply in 2023, at 20,000 tonnes, representing approximately 47.0 percent of the 42,533-tonne total across reporting countries. Italy ranked second at 6,983 tonnes, followed by Indonesia at 4,295 tonnes. Poland also led on a per-person basis, at 1.41 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual dietary intake.
Morocco placed fourth at 2,556 tonnes, with Kazakhstan fifth at 2,500 and Tunisia sixth at 1,678. Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Algeria and Mongolia closed the top ten between 324 and 1,347 tonnes. The top three held 73.5 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 85.4 percent. Poland had the highest listed food supply at 20,000 tonnes, while Poland also had the highest per-capita food supply. Italy lost 806 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 10.3 percent to 6,983 tonnes. Algeria lost 770 tonnes, down 44.5 percent. Indonesia shed 619 tonnes, down 12.6 percent. Cameroon fell 398 tonnes, down 97.5 percent to 10 tonnes. Lesotho gave up 339 tonnes, down 95.1 percent. Angola dropped 280 tonnes, down 75.9 percent. Vietnam fell 258 tonnes, down 18.2 percent. Tunisia added 413 tonnes, up 32.6 percent. The 48 countries present in both years eased from 45,334 tonnes, down 2,802 tonnes, or 6.2 percent, with one departure at a trace 0.32 tonnes and no arrivals. Between 2019 and 2023, the 40 countries present in both years fell from 48,451 tonnes to 35,528 tonnes, down 12,924 tonnes, or 26.7 percent. Poland lost 11,000 tonnes, down 35.5 percent. Vietnam shed 1,185 tonnes, down 50.5 percent. Tunisia gave up 533 tonnes, down 24.1 percent. Angola fell 522 tonnes, down 85.4 percent. Algeria dropped 428 tonnes, down 30.9 percent. Cameroon lost 353 tonnes, down 97.2 percent. Kazakhstan added 700 tonnes, up 38.9 percent. Morocco added 689 tonnes, up 36.9 percent. Three countries left with 19 tonnes, against eight arrivals with 7,005. Poland's 1.41 grams a day towered over Tunisia's 0.38 in second. Kazakhstan sat third at 0.34 grams, with Italy at 0.32 and Mongolia at 0.26. Bahrain, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Algeria and Belize followed below 0.22 grams. Poland therefore leads the table both by total food supply and by food supply per person. Casein for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The leader sheds a third yet keeps nearly half the table. The tonnage figures show the total quantity available for human consumption, while the per-person figures adjust that supply for population size. Neither measure represents the quantity actually eaten. Cameroon's reported supply fell 97.5 percent in the latest year to 10.08 tonnes and 97.2 percent across five years. Lesotho fell 95.1 percent in the latest year to 17.49 tonnes. Large percentage changes from small bases should be read alongside the underlying tonnages. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for casein across 2019-2023. Percentages rest on the earlier year, and no percentage is stated when the earlier-year value is zero. The dataset contains 52 countries after aggregates are removed, all but four with 2023 values. Only countries holding values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 42,533 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How large was Poland's lead in casein supply per person?
Poland led at 1.41 grams per person per day in 2023, well ahead of Tunisia at 0.38 grams and Kazakhstan at 0.34 grams per day.
What share of reported casein supply came from Poland?
Poland accounted for 47.0 percent of the listed 2023 total of 42,533 tonnes, with the top three holding 73.5 percent together in the same table.
How much did Italy lose lately?
Italy lost 806 tonnes, down 10.3 percent in the latest year to 6,983 tonnes, the deepest single latest-year loss among all countries in the file.
Does the table show how much casein people actually consume?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual intake in the reference year. A reported zero differs from a blank value, which indicates missing data.
What faded most over five years?
Poland lost 11,000 reported tonnes, down 35.5 percent across the five years from 2019 to 2023, yet kept nearly half the listed total in 2023.
