Cashew Nuts, Shelled Consumption by Country

India led shelled cashew nut food supply in 2023 at 492,439 tonnes, 37.5 percent of the total. Vietnam came second and the United States third. Vietnam held the highest supply per person at 6.70 grams a day, far above India's 0.94 despite India's larger volume. On the per-person scale, Vietnam was followed by the Netherlands. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not what people actually ate.

China took fourth place at 47,232 tonnes and Germany fifth at 42,030, with Brazil sixth (24,450), the United Kingdom seventh (23,835), Türkiye eighth (20,974), France ninth (16,746) and Australia tenth (16,587). The leading three held 66.9 percent of supply, and India's total was 2.01 times Vietnam's.

• Vietnam's supply grew 203.6 percent over five years, adding 164,455 tonnes.
• Indonesia multiplied its supply many times over, from 795.88 tonnes in 2019 to 13,671 in 2023.
• Ivory Coast reported zero in 2023 after 9,733 tonnes in 2022.
• Türkiye doubled in the latest year, from 9,503 tonnes to 20,974.

The Latest Cashew Nuts Year

Across the 158 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply edged down 1.3 percent, from 1,331,453 tonnes to 1,313,702, a loss of 17,752 tonnes. India's 48,694-tonne decline exceeded the whole net fall, so gains elsewhere offset it; Iran added 13,347 tonnes and Türkiye 11,471. Brazil shed 10,173 tonnes and Ivory Coast 9,733. Saudi Arabia added 8,451 tonnes.

Cashew Nuts Across the Whole Period

Of the 154 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total climbed 40.6 percent, from 932,418 tonnes to 1,311,401, a gain of 378,983 tonnes. Vietnam drove 43.4 percent of that advance and India 31.3 percent. China added 19,771 tonnes and Türkiye 14,811. The United States moved the other way, shedding 11,276 tonnes. Five countries entered and two left; the newcomers carried 2,300.82 tonnes in 2023 against 0.32 tonnes for the leavers.

Cashew Nuts Per Person

Vietnam's 6.70 grams a day stood far above the rest, followed by the Netherlands at 2.50 and a tie between Bahrain and Qatar at 2.31. Israel (1.90) and New Zealand (1.81) came next. Vietnam is the only country that ranks first on both the volume and the per-person tables, a rare alignment.

What the Cashew Nuts Table Measures

Shelled cashew nuts form a single FAO item, counted apart from cashews in shell and from other tree nuts. Each value is a reference-year food supply figure rather than a harvest or a sale, and the grams-per-person column restates that same supply across each country's residents.

Where Cashew Nuts Supply Changed Most

Vietnam's rebound was the table's defining move, from 29,719 tonnes in 2020 to 267,620 in 2021. Ivory Coast's 9,733 tonnes went to zero in 2023; FAO lists zero after a large value, which is worth checking against the source. Iran reversed a near-total loss, from 91.31 tonnes in 2022 to 13,438 in 2023, while the United States kept easing, from 180,209 tonnes in 2021 to 140,745.

Methodology

Tonnes are FAO's food supply quantity for shelled cashew nuts, from element 5141, and the grams-per-person-per-day column is element 665; both cover 2019 to 2023. A change divides by the earlier year, and a zero base leaves no percentage. Only countries with a value in both years enter a comparison. A reported zero and a blank cell differ and are never treated as equals. The figures record food available for human consumption, with no deduction for household waste or losses, so they are not the amount people actually eat. The table holds 161 countries, with World, regions and the China aggregate removed and China kept as one row; 159 carry a 2023 value. Compiled by StatsGeo from FAO FAOSTAT.
