Cassava Tapioca Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record tapioca of cassava available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 90 reporters; 83 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 1,166,682 tonnes. Indonesia holds more than half the 2023 supply — after a single year that removed a fifth of the table.
Indonesia reported the largest 2023 supply at 623,342 tonnes, while Paraguay recorded the highest per-capita figure at 12.2 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 1,474,504 tonnes to 1,164,103, down 310,401 tonnes or 21.1 percent across 80 reporters. Indonesia fell 309,170 tonnes (down 33.2 percent) — nearly the entire net decline on its own — with China down 7,794 (down 53.6 percent), Thailand down 4,248 (down 34.9 percent) and Ivory Coast down 1,250 (down 16.7 percent). Nigeria added 3,155 tonnes (up 1.1 percent), with Malaysia adding 2,354 (up 35.7 percent), Sierra Leone 2,263 (up 35.1 percent) and Bangladesh 2,025 (up 17.8 percent). Three reporters entered with 2,579 tonnes; none left. The common total moved from 1,147,291 tonnes to 1,163,396, up 16,105 tonnes or 1.4 percent across 67 reporters. Indonesia added 29,173 tonnes (up 4.9 percent) — 181.1 percent of the net change — while Thailand fell 11,242 (down 58.7 percent), Madagascar 10,735 (down 13.6 percent) and China 8,336 (down 55.2 percent); Ghana added 6,600 (up 53.2 percent), Bangladesh 6,567 (up 95.9 percent) and the United States 4,490 (up 27.0 percent), while India fell 6,233 (down 37.6 percent). Nigeria, the second-largest reporter, moved 108 tonnes across the five years. Six reporters left with 177 tonnes between them; sixteen entered with 3,286. Indonesia's 623,342 tonnes top the 2023 table at 53.4 percent of the listed total, 2.19 times Nigeria's 284,681 in second. Madagascar follows at 67,960 with Paraguay at 30,468; the top three hold 83.7 percent, the top five 88.2 percent and the top ten 94.6 percent. Colombia, the United States, Ghana, Bangladesh, Cameroon and India complete the ten. Per person, Paraguay stands first at 12.2 grams — fourth by volume and first per person — with Indonesia at 6.07, Madagascar at 5.97, Nigeria at 3.42, Sierra Leone at 2.82, Timor-Leste at 2.33, Ghana at 1.54, Colombia at 1.19, Cameroon at 1.0 and Congo at 0.76 behind. The FAO item covers tapioca of cassava, not flour and not fresh roots, which have their own articles; the three are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. Indonesia had the largest 2023 listed supply of cassava tapioca at 623,342 tonnes, while Paraguay had the highest per-capita figure at 12.2 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 1,166,682 tonnes across 83 reporters. On a common-reporter basis, the total was up 1.4 percent from 2019 to 2023. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Behind these numbers sits a 90-reporter file, each reporter holding a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023. The tables show reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are excluded, and China here is the China reporter. Percentages anchor to the earlier endpoint year across reporters present in both years; zero-base years produce no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read against the base. The source in both measures is FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, for tapioca of cassava over 2019-2023. What is counted is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Zero reports zero and blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 1,166,682 tonnes sums the 83 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What caused the 2023 decline in the common total?
The common total added 1.4 percent between 2019 and 2023, then fell 21.1 percent between 2022 and 2023 as Indonesia unwound from 932,512 to 623,342 tonnes. The figures record both moves without attributing causes.
How did Nigeria stay flat for five years?
Nigeria reported 284,789 tonnes in 2019 and 284,681 in 2023, a difference of 108 tonnes. The figures record the stability, not what held it there.
How can Paraguay lead per person from fourth place?
Paraguay reported 30,468 tonnes against 12.2 grams a day, fourth by volume and first per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
