Tapioca of Potatoes Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record tapioca of potatoes available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 98 reporters; 89 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 40,944 tonnes. The table is getting smaller — down 26.6 percent on a common-reporter basis in five years — and Denmark leads it twice, by volume and per person.
Denmark reported the largest 2023 supply at 12,550 tonnes and the highest per-capita figure at 5.78 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 55,685 tonnes to 40,900, down 14,784 tonnes or 26.6 percent across 80 reporters. Myanmar reported 22,712 tonnes in 2019 — the largest supply that year — and 734.84 tonnes in 2023, a fall of 21,977 tonnes or 96.8 percent, worth 148.7 percent of the net decline. Offsetting it in the arithmetic, the United States added 3,475 tonnes (up 267.9 percent), the United Arab Emirates 2,444 from a reported 2019 zero, Jordan 899 (up 47.2 percent), Denmark 806 (up 6.9 percent) and Oman 668 (up 962.1 percent); Vietnam fell 1,338 (down 42.1 percent) and Ghana 692 (down 82.1 percent). Six reporters left with 39 tonnes between them while nine entered with 43. Denmark's 12,550 tonnes top the 2023 table at 30.7 percent of the listed total, 2.43 times Australia's 5,169 in second. The top three hold 54.9 percent with the United States at 4,772, the top five 67.7 percent and the top ten 84.8 percent. Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Italy, Poland and Oman complete the ten. Per person, Denmark also stands first at 5.78 grams — the rare case of a volume leader heading the per-person list too. The common total moved from 52,057 tonnes to 40,944, down 11,114 tonnes or 21.3 percent across 88 reporters. Tanzania fell 2,893 tonnes (down 89.6 percent), with Myanmar down 2,294 (down 75.7 percent), the United States down 2,015 (down 29.7 percent), Ivory Coast down 1,966 to zero, Jordan down 1,814 (down 39.3 percent), Australia down 1,168 (down 18.4 percent) and Senegal down 606 (down 75.1 percent); Oman added 545 tonnes (up 283.2 percent). One reporter left below a tonne and one entered at 0.01 tonnes. The FAO item covers tapioca prepared from potatoes, as classified by FAO. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis — Denmark's double lead is unusual precisely because large totals rarely head the per-person ranking. Denmark had the largest 2023 listed supply at 12,550 tonnes and the highest per-capita figure at 5.78 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 40,944 tonnes across 89 reporters, down 26.6 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Comparisons in this article run across reporters holding values in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the percentage base; zero-base years get no percentage, and percentages from small starts should be read with the base in mind. Country totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes) and per-person values are element 665 in grams per capita per day, for tapioca of potatoes from 2019 through 2023 — availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Ninety-eight reporters sit behind the tables, reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows play no part, and China here is the China reporter. Zero reports zero while blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 40,944 tonnes sums the 89 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Myanmar fall 96.8 percent in five years?
Myanmar reported 22,712 tonnes in 2019 and 734.84 tonnes in 2023, a fall of 21,977 tonnes. The figures record the size of the collapse, not what caused it.
How can Denmark lead the table twice?
Denmark reported 12,550 tonnes against 5.78 grams a day, first by volume and first per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis, and large totals rarely head that ranking.
Did the United States rise or fall?
Both, in different windows: up 3,475 tonnes (up 267.9 percent) between 2019 and 2023, then down 2,015 tonnes (down 29.7 percent) between 2022 and 2023. Percentage direction always belongs to its stated period.
