Cattle, Butcher Fat Consumption by Country
In 2023, France had the world's largest listed cattle butcher fat food supply at 33,688 tonnes, accounting for 51.1 percent of the total across 16 countries with reported values. Uruguay ranked first per person at 5.03 grams per day, ahead of Mongolia at 2.59 grams. These FAOSTAT figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Canada placed second at 9,677 tonnes and Uruguay third at 6,214 tonnes. Pakistan placed fourth at 4,820 tonnes, with New Zealand fifth at 3,355 and Mongolia sixth at 3,250. Panama, Austria, Greece and Guatemala closed the file between 488 and 2,653 tonnes. The top three held 75.1 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 87.5 percent. France had the highest listed food supply, while Uruguay had the highest per-capita food supply. France added 7,397 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 28.1 percent. Uruguay added 840 tonnes, up 15.6 percent. Paraguay added 352 tonnes from 10.49 tonnes. Canada lost 25,330 tonnes, down 72.4 percent to 9,677 tonnes. New Zealand shed 782 tonnes, down 18.9 percent. Greece gave up 417 tonnes, down 37.4 percent. Mongolia fell 286 tonnes, down 8.1 percent. Panama dropped 148 tonnes, down 5.3 percent. The 16 countries present in both years fell from 84,227 tonnes to 65,986 tonnes, down 18,241 tonnes, or 21.7 percent, with no entries or exits. Between 2019 and 2023, the 15 countries present in both years surged from 36,314 tonnes to 65,986 tonnes, up 29,672 tonnes, or 81.7 percent. France added 24,532 tonnes, up 267.9 percent from 9,156, accounting for 82.7 percent of the net gain. Uruguay added 5,694 tonnes from 520. New Zealand added 3,355 tonnes from a zero base. Mongolia added 1,196 tonnes, up 58.2 percent. Greece added 698 tonnes from almost nothing. Canada lost 4,386 tonnes, down 31.2 percent. Belgium went from 1,046 tonnes to a reported zero. The United Kingdom went from 402 tonnes to a reported zero. One country left holding nothing, and one arrived with nothing. Uruguay's 5.03 grams a day nearly doubled Mongolia's 2.59 in second. New Zealand sat third at 1.78 grams, with Panama at 1.63 and France at 1.39. Canada, Austria, Greece, Paraguay and Guatemala followed below 0.7 grams. France, first by volume, placed fifth per person. Butcher fat of cattle for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Seventeen countries make a compact file where one large move rewrites the ranking. Belgium fell to a reported zero in 2023 from 1,046 tonnes in 2019, and the United Kingdom from 402 tonnes; those zeros merit checking against the source. Paraguay's 3,352.8 percent latest rate divides by 10.49 tonnes. Greece's five-year rate divides by 0.43 tonnes. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts file tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for butcher fat across 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; a percentage change is not calculated where that base is zero. The dataset contains 17 countries after aggregates are removed, all but one with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
