Fat Preparations n.e.c. Consumption by Country

China ranked first in fat preparations n.e.c. food supply in 2023, with 1,012,411 tonnes, or about 29.2 percent of the listed country total. The United States ranked second with 380,287 tonnes, followed by Indonesia with 193,768 tonnes. Belize recorded the highest reported daily per-capita supply at 20.8 grams. The listed 2023 total was 3,463,578 tonnes, and 171 of the 173 country rows reported a value for that year, 165 of them above zero. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

France placed fourth by volume at 114,877 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 45.8 percent of the listed 2023 total, with China alone supplying roughly 29.2 percent.

• Argentina lost about a quarter of its 2022 level.

Chile Records the Largest Annual Decline

Chile lost 57,203 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 61.8 percent to 35,412 tonnes. Uzbekistan lost 42,197 tonnes, down 51.9 percent, and Argentina shed 27,327 tonnes, down 23.5 percent. Nigeria added 28,031 tonnes, up 85.0 percent, Türkiye added 41,307 tonnes, up 275.7 percent, and Indonesia added 156,088 tonnes, up 414.3 percent. The countries with a value in both years rose from 3,351,250 tonnes to 3,463,578 tonnes, up 112,328 tonnes, or 3.4 percent, with no departures and no arrivals.

China Records the Largest Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 158 countries with a value in both years rose from 2,390,986 tonnes to 3,327,199 tonnes, up 936,213 tonnes, or 39.2 percent. China recorded the largest increase, adding 543,234 tonnes, up 115.8 percent. The United States added 129,771 tonnes, up 51.8 percent, and Türkiye added 56,234 tonnes from 54.68 tonnes. Chile recorded the largest decline, losing 70,839 tonnes, down 66.7 percent, while Indonesia shed 63,675 tonnes, down 24.7 percent, and Denmark gave up 19,556 tonnes, down 78.4 percent. Thirteen countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while Cuba and Kuwait left it.

Belize Leads Fat Preparations Supply per Person

Belize recorded 20.8 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Norway at 18.64 grams in second and Antigua and Barbuda at 13.68 grams in third. Armenia sat fourth at 12.68 grams, with Saint Lucia at 11.35 grams and the Bahamas at 10.45 grams. China, first by volume, ranked 71st per person at 1.95 grams, so the two rankings point to very different countries here.

What the Fat Preparations Data Measures

Fat preparations n.e.c. available for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

Six countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including Mexico, which fell from 3,520 tonnes in 2022, and Djibouti, which fell from 139 tonnes, so those drops warrant a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the two rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for fat preparations n.e.c. over 2019-2023. Of the 173 country rows, 171 reported a value in 2023 and 165 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives the same set of countries for 2022-2023 and 158 of them for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.
