Goat Cheese Consumption by Country
France ranked first in goat cheese food supply in 2023, with 87,820 tonnes, or about 22.1 percent of the listed total. Spain ranked second at 52,510 tonnes, followed by Niger at 43,063 tonnes. Greece had the highest listed supply per person at 9.43 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 396,774 tonnes, and 36 of the 37 country rows reported a value for that year, 35 of them above zero. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Iran placed fourth by volume at 40,163 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 46.2 percent of the listed 2023 total, so supply here is spread more evenly than a single dominant leader would suggest. France lost 2,050 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 2.3 percent, and remained the largest national total. Greece lost 284 tonnes, down 0.8 percent, and Morocco shed 188 tonnes, down 4.1 percent. Syria added 469 tonnes, up 14.2 percent, the Netherlands added 870 tonnes, up 3.1 percent, and Romania added 990 tonnes, up 98.0 percent. Every country with a 2022 value also reported one for 2023, so that shared total rose from 395,833 tonnes to 396,774 tonnes, up 941 tonnes, or 0.2 percent. Between 2019 and 2023, the countries with a value in both years rose from 396,607 tonnes to 396,774 tonnes, up 167 tonnes, a change of less than a tenth of one percent. France lost 12,670 tonnes, down 12.6 percent, and Ukraine shed 1,107 tonnes, down 24.3 percent. Iran added 5,584 tonnes, up 16.1 percent, the Netherlands added 4,600 tonnes, and Mexico added 1,280 tonnes. Poland had a 2019 value of 750 tonnes but none afterwards, and no country entered the comparison. Greece recorded 9.43 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Niger at 4.51 grams in second and the Netherlands at 4.35 grams in third. Tajikistan sat fourth at 3.73 grams, with France at 3.62 grams and Spain at 3.00 grams. France, first by volume, placed fifth per person, so the two rankings point to different countries. Fresh or processed goat cheese available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The per-person figure adjusts reported food supply for population size, and neither measure shows how much people actually ate. Czechia reported zero in 2023 after 74.95 tonnes in 2022, and the Netherlands reported a single zero in 2021 between 26,870 tonnes in 2020 and 27,870 tonnes in 2022, so both patterns deserve a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, and neither one should be read as proof that supply stopped. The source is FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 reports food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 reports it in grams per capita per day, for cheese from milk of goats, fresh or processed, over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 37 country rows, 36 reported a value in 2023 and 35 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives the same set of countries in both windows, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the highest goat cheese supply?
France ranked first in 2023, with about 22.1 percent of the listed total reported across the 36 countries that recorded a value in that year.
Why does Greece rank above France per person?
Greece ranked first per person, ahead of Niger at 4.51 grams and the Netherlands at 4.35 grams, while France placed fifth at 3.62 grams despite leading on volume.
Which country recorded the largest annual decline?
France lost 2,050 tonnes, down 2.3 percent, to 87,820 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, the largest decline by tonnage among the countries with comparable values.
Why can reported goat cheese supply differ from actual intake?
The FAO figures describe food available for human consumption rather than the amount ultimately eaten, so they should be read as supply indicators and not as direct measurements of individual dietary intake.
Which countries reported no value for 2023?
Poland has no 2023 value in this table after reporting 750 tonnes in 2019, which is missing data rather than a reported zero, while Czechia did report zero.
