The United States added 77,038 tonnes, up 1.3 percent. Poland added 59,715 tonnes, up 8.0 percent. Türkiye added 57,900 tonnes, up 10.4 percent. The 175 countries present in both years rose from 21,416,555 tonnes to 21,703,405 tonnes, up 286,850 tonnes, or just over one percent, with no departures and no arrivals.

Türkiye Rises over Five-Year Cheese from Whole Cow Milk

Between 2019 and 2023, the 174 countries present in both years rose from 19,774,776 tonnes to 21,702,907 tonnes, up 1,928,131 tonnes, or 9.8 percent. Türkiye added 525,614 tonnes, up 585.6 percent. The United States added 349,703 tonnes, up 6.0 percent. Spain added 128,527 tonnes, up 43.2 percent. Italy lost 61,060 tonnes, down 5.0 percent. Germany lost 55,810 tonnes, down 3.1 percent. Iraq lost 40,067 tonnes, down 60.8 percent. One country left the series with 17,862 tonnes, while one new reporter entered with 498.67 tonnes.

Iceland Eats Cheese from Whole Cow Milk per Person

Iceland's 87.35 grams a day beat Montenegro's 67.47 in second and Denmark's 65.49 in third. Estonia sat fourth at 64.45 grams, with France at 64.01 and Finland at 62.87. Switzerland, Latvia, Austria and Poland followed below 62 grams. The United States, first by volume, sat far down the daily table.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts mark tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for whole cow cheese across 2019-2023. For this dataset, consumption refers to food available for human consumption in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts; it does not represent measured dietary intake or the amount actually eaten by consumers. The 2023 ranking is based on tonnes, while the per-person ranking uses grams per person per day. Percentages use the earlier year as the base; percentage changes are not calculated from a zero base. The universe counts 176 countries minus aggregates, all but one with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 21,703,405 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and values below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimal places.
