Chemically Pure Maltose Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record maltose in chemically pure form available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 51 reporters; 43 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 949 tonnes. Across the 27 reporters with values at both endpoints, the five-year total fell by just 2 tonnes, while the latest year alone brought a 72.0 percent decline.
Mozambique reported the largest 2023 supply at 414.98 tonnes, at 0.03 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 3,386 tonnes to 947, down 2,439 tonnes or 72.0 percent across 38 reporters. Myanmar fell 2,091 tonnes to zero and Malaysia 430 tonnes to zero; Italy fell 52 to zero and Nepal 51 to zero. Mozambique added 68 tonnes (up 19.7 percent), with Algeria adding 37 (up 153.6 percent), Bangladesh 32 (up 18.5 percent) and the Dominican Republic 26 from a 2022 zero. Five reporters appeared in 2023 with 2 tonnes between them. The common total moved from 946 tonnes to 944, down 2 tonnes or 0.2 percent across 27 reporters. Malaysia fell 448 tonnes to zero while Mozambique added 199 (up 91.8 percent); Morocco added 166 from a reported 2019 zero and Bangladesh 162 (up 379.4 percent), while Algeria added 61 from 0.18 tonnes; Romania fell 48 to zero and Cameroon 48.15 to 0.45 (down 99.1 percent), with the Netherlands down 37 (down 68.2 percent). Six reporters had a 2019 value but none in 2023, together accounting for 47 tonnes. Sixteen others had no 2019 value but reported a combined 4 tonnes in 2023. Mozambique's 414.98 tonnes top the 2023 table at 43.7 percent of the listed total, 2.02 times Bangladesh's 205.26 in second. Morocco follows at 166.39 with Algeria at 60.84; the top three hold 82.9 percent, the top five 92.1 percent and the top ten 99.0 percent. The Dominican Republic, Slovakia, Bahrain, the Netherlands, Cambodia and Slovenia complete the ten. Per-person values peak at 0.03 grams a day, shared by Bahrain and Mozambique. The FAO item covers maltose in chemically pure form, the isolated sweetener as classified by FAO. Food supply quantity measures the amount available for human consumption during the reference year; it does not represent the amount people actually ate. The gram-per-person-per-day figure expresses the same reported supply on a daily per-capita basis. Mozambique had the largest 2023 listed supply of chemically pure maltose at 414.98 tonnes, ahead of Bangladesh at 205.26 tonnes. The 2023 listed total was 949 tonnes across 43 reporters. Among the 27 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, the total was 0.2 percent lower in 2023; among the 38 common reporters for 2022 and 2023, it fell 72.0 percent in the latest year. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Fifty-one reporters with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 make the universe; the tables print reporters only, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows excluded and China standing for the China reporter. The earlier endpoint year bases every percentage across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years give no percentage, and percentages based on very small values should be read with the base stated. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, follows chemically pure maltose over 2019-2023. The counted object is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 949 tonnes sums the 43 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How can five years net minus two tonnes?
Malaysia fell 448 tonnes while Mozambique added 199, Morocco 166 and Bangladesh 162, with smaller moves filling the rest. The five-year comparison uses the 27 reporters with values at both endpoints.
Which countries drove the 2022–2023 decline?
Myanmar's 2,091 tonnes and Malaysia's 430 went to zero, while Italy and Nepal lost another 103 tonnes combined. Mozambique, Algeria and Bangladesh added 137 tonnes together, but the overall common total still fell 2,439 tonnes.
Why is Algeria's percentage increase so large?
Algeria rose from 0.18 tonnes in 2019 to 60.84 in 2023. The increase is about 33,700 percent because the 2019 base was extremely small, while the 2023 quantity remained modest in absolute terms.
