Cinnamon and Cinnamon-Tree Flowers, Raw Consumption by Country

Indonesia had the largest reported food supply of raw cinnamon and cinnamon-tree flowers in 2023, at 35,050 tonnes, accounting for about 18.4 percent of the listed total of 190,605 tonnes. India ranked second at 29,518 tonnes, followed by the United States at 23,772 tonnes. Grenada led the per-person measure at 1.78 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Which country had the highest food supply of raw cinnamon in 2023? Indonesia ranked first by total volume, with 35,050 tonnes. Grenada ranked first per person, at 1.78 grams per day. Indonesia, India and the United States together accounted for about 46.3 percent of the listed annual total.

China ranked fourth at 14,219 tonnes, followed by Bangladesh at 9,288 and Mexico at 8,872. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Brazil completed the top ten, with reported totals ranging from 2,617 to 5,836 tonnes. The five largest countries accounted for approximately 58.7 percent of the listed total.

• China increased by 5,008 tonnes from 2022 to 2023, a rise of 54.4 percent.
• Indonesia increased by 4,158 tonnes, or 13.5 percent.
• The United States declined by 3,586 tonnes, or 13.1 percent, to 23,772 tonnes.
• Sri Lanka fell by about 2,607 tonnes, or 80.0 percent, to 650.58 tonnes.

Changes from 2022 to 2023

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, adding 5,008 tonnes to reach 14,219 tonnes. Indonesia increased by 4,158 tonnes and India by 1,346 tonnes. The United States declined by 3,586 tonnes, while Sri Lanka fell by about 2,607 tonnes. South Korea decreased by approximately 2,381 tonnes, and the Netherlands by about 1,743 tonnes. Across the 169 countries with reported values in both years, the listed total fell from 192,716 to 190,605 tonnes, a decline of 2,111 tonnes, or about 1.1 percent.

Five-Year Changes in Raw Cinnamon Supply

For the 165 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, the listed total decreased from 194,910 to 190,604 tonnes. Based on these displayed totals, the decline was 4,306 tonnes, or about 2.2 percent. India increased by 6,830 tonnes, while Bangladesh added 2,591 tonnes and Mexico 1,905 tonnes. Indonesia declined by 6,098 tonnes, Sri Lanka by about 5,794 tonnes, and China by 4,585 tonnes. South Korea and Vietnam also reported substantially lower values in 2023 than in 2019.

Raw Cinnamon Food Supply per Person

Grenada ranked first in 2023 at 1.78 grams per person per day, followed by Sao Tome and Principe at 0.63 grams. Antigua and Barbuda ranked third at 0.53 grams, while Bahrain reported 0.47 grams and Saudi Arabia 0.39 grams. Kuwait, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Oman and Qatar were also among the countries below 0.4 grams per person per day. Indonesia led by total volume but ranked seventh per person.

What the Data Measures

The figures cover raw cinnamon and cinnamon-tree flowers in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts from 2019 through 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years include only countries and areas with reported values at both endpoints. A reported zero is retained as zero, while a blank cell indicates missing data. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual dietary intake. The United Arab Emirates reported 700 tonnes in 2019 and zero in 2023; such reported zeros are retained as supplied and should be checked against FAOSTAT records before being read as real changes.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts provide food supply quantity in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers raw cinnamon and cinnamon-tree flowers from 2019 to 2023. The dataset includes 173 countries and areas after aggregate rows are excluded, of which 170 have reported values for 2023. Annual totals include countries and areas with reported values for the relevant year. Comparisons use only countries and areas with values in both years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing data. The figures represent food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
