Coal Electricity Generation by Country

Coal electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from coal in each country, in billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh) per year. Coal is the largest single source in the global electricity mix. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 95 countries, with 93 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 10,387.43 BkWh in 2024, up from 10,341.54 BkWh in 2023.

Coal Electricity Generation by Country Map

China (5,774.94 BkWh) generated well over half of the world's coal electricity in 2024 — about 3.8 times India (1,516.88 BkWh). The United States (652.16 BkWh), Indonesia (259.73 BkWh) and Japan (258.67 BkWh) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero.

China accounted for about 55.6% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 70.2%, the top three about 76.5%, the top five about 81.5%, and the top ten about 89.4%. The remaining countries together accounted for only about 10.6%.

China drove the latest increase

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 5,699.25 to 5,774.94 BkWh (+75.69 BkWh, about 1.3%). The world total increased by 45.89 BkWh, from 10,341.54 to 10,387.43 BkWh. South Korea recorded the largest decline among countries with reported values in both years, falling from 186.69 to 154.79 BkWh (-31.90 BkWh, about 17.1%).

What changed among the leading coal generators

China (+1.3%), India (+2.8%) and Indonesia (+5.4%) increased their coal-fired generation in 2024, while the United States (-3.4%) and Japan (-8.0%) declined. South Korea recorded the steepest percentage fall among the larger producers, at 17.1%. With China and India both increasing, the world total reached a new high despite declines in several major producers.

A six-year view of coal generation

Reported world values were 9,532.47 BkWh in 2019, 9,163.99 BkWh in 2020, 9,733.57 BkWh in 2021, 9,866.95 BkWh in 2022, 10,341.54 BkWh in 2023 and 10,387.43 BkWh in 2024. Generation ended about 9.0% above the 2019 level, with 2024 marking the highest value in the series.

How concentrated is coal-fired generation?

Coal generated 10,387.43 BkWh worldwide in 2024, equal to about 33.9% of total electricity generation. China alone produced 5,774.94 BkWh, more than the next nine countries combined, which together generated about 3,511.13 BkWh. The figures describe electricity generated from coal, rather than coal production or coal consumption.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual electricity generation from coal in billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers electricity generation from coal only; other electricity sources and total generation are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries generate the most coal electricity?

China (5,774.94 BkWh) and India (1,516.88 BkWh) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by the United States (652.16 BkWh), Indonesia (259.73 BkWh) and Japan (258.67 BkWh).

Is coal still the largest electricity source?

Yes. Coal generated 10,387.43 BkWh in 2024, equal to about 33.9% of the 30,664.34 BkWh of electricity generated worldwide. It was the largest individual source in the EIA series.

Why did South Korea's coal electricity generation fall in 2024?

South Korea fell from 186.69 to 154.79 BkWh, a decrease of 31.90 BkWh or about 17.1%. It was the largest decline among countries with reported values in both years.

How should empty cells be read?

Empty means no reported value in the source. It is different from 0, which means the source reports zero.
