Natural Gas Electricity Generation by Country
Natural gas electricity generation by country measures electricity generated from natural gas for each country, in billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh) per year. Natural gas is the second-largest fossil fuel used for electricity generation worldwide, behind coal. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 124 countries, with 124 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 6,647.54 BkWh in 2024, up from 6,528.57 BkWh in 2023.
The United States (1,869.90 BkWh) generated well over a quarter of the world's gas electricity in 2024 — about 3.7 times Russia (500.00 BkWh). Japan (309.00 BkWh), Iran (303.93 BkWh) and China (303.82 BkWh) completed the top five, with Iran and China separated by just 0.11 BkWh. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 28.1% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 35.7%, the top three about 40.3%, the top five about 49.4%, and the top ten about 64.0%. The United States recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 1,806.06 to 1,869.90 BkWh (+63.84 BkWh, about 3.5%). The world total rose from 6,528.57 to 6,647.54 BkWh (+118.97 BkWh, about 1.8%). The largest decline among reported pairs was Spain, falling from 59.49 to 47.65 BkWh (-11.85 BkWh, about 19.9%). China (+7.2%) grew the fastest in percentage terms among the top five, while the United States (+3.5%) added the most in absolute terms. Russia (-2.1%) and Japan (-1.1%) both declined; Iran (+0.4%) barely moved. Spain's -19.9% was the steepest fall among larger producers. Reported world values were 6,250.36 BkWh in 2019, 6,248.73 BkWh in 2020, 6,434.28 BkWh in 2021, 6,445.92 BkWh in 2022, 6,528.57 BkWh in 2023 and 6,647.54 BkWh in 2024. Generation ended about 6.4% above the 2019 level, with the total remaining essentially unchanged in 2020 before rising in each of the following four years. Gas is the second fossil source for electricity (6,647.54 BkWh) behind coal (10,387.43), yet its geography is American-led rather than Chinese-led: the United States holds 28.1% here against 4.6% for China. Japan, Iran and China cluster tightly in third to fifth, separated by just 5.18 BkWh. The ranking reflects electricity generated from gas, not gas produced or consumed. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual electricity generation from natural gas in billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers gas generation only; other sources and total generation are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries generate the most gas electricity?
The United States (1,869.90 BkWh) and Russia (500.00 BkWh) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Japan (309.00 BkWh), Iran (303.93 BkWh) and China (303.82 BkWh).
Why is Iran ahead of China?
Iran ranked fourth and China fifth, with only 0.11 BkWh separating them in 2024: Iran reported 303.93 BkWh compared with China's 303.82 BkWh.
How much did Spain's gas electricity generation decline in 2024?
Spain fell from 59.49 to 47.65 BkWh (-11.85 BkWh, about 19.9%), the largest decline among countries with reported values in both years.
How should empty cells be read?
Empty means no reported value in the source. It is different from 0, which means the source reports zero.
