Cocoa Paste Not Defatted Consumption by Country
Russia had the largest listed food supply of undefatted cocoa paste in 2023, at 12,302 tonnes, 22.7 percent of the annual listed consumption total. Ukraine followed at 7,810 tonnes and Kazakhstan at 7,689, while Belarus had the highest food supply per person at 1.61 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 54,221 tonnes across 74 countries, 70 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
The overall picture changed sharply across the five-year series. Matched countries fell 13.1 percent in the latest year and 34.3 percent between 2019 and 2023, although the country-level changes were far from uniform. Cameroon drove the latest decline, while Russia dominated the five-year fall.
Cameroon placed fourth at 7,259 tonnes, with Belarus fifth at 5,342 and the United Arab Emirates sixth at 2,464. Saudi Arabia, Chile, the Netherlands and Madagascar closed the top ten between 1,033 and 1,968 tonnes. The top three held 51.3 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 74.5 percent. Cameroon lost 5,549 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 43.3 percent to 7,259 tonnes. Belarus lost 2,547 tonnes, down 32.3 percent. Russia gave up 1,463 tonnes, down 10.6 percent. Chile shed 1,393 tonnes, down 43.1 percent. The Netherlands fell 797 tonnes, down 36.4 percent. Ukraine added 2,187 tonnes, up 38.9 percent. Madagascar added 1,033 tonnes from a zero base. Kazakhstan added 774 tonnes, up 11.2 percent. The 69 countries present in both years fell from 62,398 tonnes to 54,221 tonnes, down 8,177 tonnes, or 13.1 percent, with one departure and one arrival, both near zero. Between 2019 and 2023, the 58 countries present in both years shrank from 82,070 tonnes to 53,943 tonnes, down 28,127 tonnes, or 34.3 percent. Russia lost 30,546 tonnes, down 71.3 percent, accounting for 108.6 percent of the net fall. The Netherlands lost 2,569 tonnes, down 64.8 percent. Belarus shed 2,431 tonnes, down 31.3 percent. Chile gave up 975 tonnes, down 34.6 percent. Kazakhstan added 4,173 tonnes, up 118.7 percent. Ukraine added 2,271 tonnes, up 41.0 percent. Saudi Arabia added 1,376 tonnes, up 232.3 percent. Madagascar added 1,031 tonnes from 2. Two countries left with 2 tonnes, against 12 arrivals with 278. Belarus' 1.61 grams a day beat Kazakhstan's 1.04 in second and Cameroon's 0.70 in third. The United Arab Emirates sat fourth at 0.63 grams, with Ukraine at 0.57 and Chile at 0.26. Moldova, Russia, Lebanon and the Netherlands followed below a quarter gram. Russia, first by volume, placed only eighth per person. The daily crown sits in Minsk; the tonnage crown sits in Moscow. The dataset reports undefatted cocoa paste available for human consumption in tonnes and grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. One country's 30,546-tonne retreat outweighs the whole file's other moves, so Russia dominates the five-year story. Large percentage changes from very small starting values should therefore be interpreted cautiously. Madagascar's 53,423.3 percent increase is driven by a very small 2019 base of just 2 tonnes, so the percentage greatly overstates the scale of the change. Saudi Arabia's 232.3 percent rate divides by 592 tonnes the same way. Data interpretation: These figures represent cocoa paste not defatted available for human consumption, rather than measured food intake. FAO reports the supply in tonnes and grams per person per day for reporting countries. The 2023 map ranks countries by tonnes, while the paired per-person measure shows the daily food supply relative to population. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for undefatted cocoa paste across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year's value as the base; no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe counts 74 countries minus aggregates, 70 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 54,221 tonnes is the sum of the 70 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Who trails Belarus per person?
Belarus clearly led cocoa paste per person in 2023, far above second-placed Kazakhstan at 1.04 grams with Cameroon next at 0.70 grams a day overall.
How much of the reported cocoa paste supply came from Russia?
Russia held 22.7 percent of the reported cocoa paste supply in 2023, while the top three countries together held 51.3 percent of the listed total.
How much did Cameroon lose lately?
Cameroon lost 5,549 tonnes, down 43.3 percent in the latest year to 7,259 tonnes, the deepest single latest-year loss among all countries in the file.
What does cocoa paste not defatted mean?
Cocoa paste not defatted is cocoa paste that retains its cocoa butter rather than having the fat removed. In this dataset, the figures refer to the amount available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
What drove the five-year fall?
Russia alone lost 30,546 tonnes, down by 71.3 percent, accounting for 108.6 percent of the net five-year 28,127-tonne fall recorded between 2019 and 2023 overall.
