Copper Production by Country

Copper production by country measures how much copper each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production, reported in terms of copper content, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for 2018–2023, built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 57 countries that record copper production in the period. 2025 figures are available individually for 14 countries, which produced a combined 20,013,000 tonnes in 2025, while the World total in the source stands at 23,000,000 tonnes. Most other countries retain their latest available Our World in Data figures, mostly from 2023.

Countries With the Largest Copper Production in 2025

Chile produced the most copper in 2025 with 5,300,000 tonnes. The Democratic Republic of Congo ranked second with 3,200,000, followed by Peru (2,700,000), China (1,800,000), and Russia (1,300,000). The United States (1,000,000), Zambia (940,000), Australia (730,000), Indonesia (710,000), and Kazakhstan (710,000) complete the top ten.

Chile alone accounted for about 23 percent of the World total in 2025, and the top five countries together accounted for about 62 percent. Chile's output was about 1.7 times that of the second-largest producer. Only Chile produced more than 5 million tonnes, and six countries produced at least 1 million tonnes.

Copper Production Around the World

In Asia, China (1,800,000) leads, ahead of Indonesia (710,000) and Kazakhstan (710,000). Mongolia (488,355) and Uzbekistan (149,000) follow with 2023 data, ahead of the Philippines (61,629), Laos (50,120), and India (23,000 in 2025).

In Europe, Russia (1,300,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Poland (410,000). Serbia (238,909) and Türkiye (127,000) follow with 2023 data, ahead of Spain (114,786), Sweden (73,780), and Bulgaria (72,698).

In the Americas, Chile (5,300,000) leads by a wide margin, ahead of Peru (2,700,000) and the United States (1,000,000). Mexico (690,000) and Canada (500,000) follow, while Brazil (376,338), Panama (330,863), and Ecuador (140,000) record smaller output with 2023 data.

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (3,200,000) leads, ahead of Zambia (940,000). Botswana (54,808), South Africa (50,023), and Morocco (32,000) follow with 2023 data.

In the Middle East, Iran (326,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Saudi Arabia (71,810), both reporting 2023 data. In Oceania, Australia (730,000 in 2025) is the largest producer, with Papua New Guinea (87,400) smaller, reporting 2023 data.

Largest Changes in Copper Production, 2024–2025

Russia recorded the largest increase, rising from 1,020,000 tonnes in 2024 to 1,300,000 in 2025 (up 280,000). The Democratic Republic of Congo rose from 2,990,000 to 3,200,000 (up 210,000), Zambia from 823,000 to 940,000 (up 117,000), and Poland from 400,000 to 410,000 (up 10,000).

Indonesia recorded the largest decline, falling from 1,010,000 to 710,000 tonnes (down 300,000). Chile fell from 5,510,000 to 5,300,000 (down 210,000), the United States by 50,000, China and Peru each by 40,000, Australia by 35,000, and Mexico by 27,000.

Despite these shifts, the World total for mine production in the source stood at 23,000,000 tonnes in both years, while the value for countries not listed individually rose from 2,850,000 tonnes to 3,000,000. In percentage terms, Russia's rise of about 28 percent and Indonesia's fall of about 30 percent were the largest swings.

Methodology

The 2018–2023 figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national copper production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; the majority of countries are not listed individually there and keep their Our World in Data series, mostly with 2023 as the latest year. Values refer to mine production of copper content, in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source lists Germany, Japan, and the Republic of Korea in its mine production table without values, and a number of smaller producers are reported together as "Other countries." In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
